The only scene I didnt like in BR was the scene where Deckard threw Rachel into the wall and started saying "kiss me" They should of made that scene better.

I agree. It was kind of like date rape. But one may argue that at that moment Deckard was having major issues going on. Here he is, a Blade Runner--killer of replicants--, and he has now gotten emotionally involved with a "machine". Pushing her might've been a way for him to vent the frustration of the sympathy he's developed for female reps. This was clearly against the "code" of the blade runner.

If you've read DADOES, this issue is covered in a lot more depth when Deckard talks to the other blade runner, Phil Resch. I quote:

"Wake up and fece you're self, Deckard. You wanted to go to bed with a female type of andriod--nothing more, nothing less. [-] What happened is that you've got your order reversed. Don't kill her and then feel physically attracted. Do it the other way."

Deckard: "Go to bed with her first--"
Resch: "--and then kill her."
(p. 125)

I agree, this scene in the film was easily the most uncomfortable. However, after years of viewing other RS films, I noticed this simillar trend in the male leads in his films. In Gladiator, for example, there are a couple of scenes reminecsent of that scene in BR. It seems to me this is a bizarre quirk in RS's character, I've seen this kind of behaviour in other films he's done.

Zero
http://wwww.dracule.com

A good friend and bigger Blade Runner fan than I, has infomed me that its all Ford. He is rumored to do love scencs only one of two ways: Silly - Han Solo in Empire and Indiana Jones in Raiders. Or rough like in Blade Runner. This is just a rumor mind you.

Actually, that was said by Sean Young in an interview. I remember reading it in the BR FAQ.

Yeah, that "rape lite" kinda disturbed me in all sorts of ways. I would've had to open a can of whup@SS on him.
---Skooter

Woah! Is there someone here named Whup@SS, or is it just responding to the "@?" Wierd!
Are you kidding? "Kiss me" is how I start all of my love scenes. Ford is god.

It's interesting that in the 1981 script (an earlier draft) that comes with the WB "Special Edition" DVD of BR, Racheal says, "Kiss me, put you're hands on me..." but then says, "...bite me"! So maybe Racheal doesn't really mind being roughed up a little bit.
I kind of like this scene. Okay, that's no way to treat a lady but I don't think that's the issue here. The brutal passion and subtle insecurity sets the replicants apart from human beings and make them quite strange in a charming way. That is if one assumes Deck is a replicant of course...

One could argue that, if Deckard is a replicant, then he would not have had time to create real emotions. Replicants have no emotions but are thought to create them themselves as a part of evolution. If Deckard and Rachel have no emotions then the scene would not be so violently wrong???

but then again, what about Roy's emotions.... maybe he has developed what Deck and Rachael have not??

Yeh yeh yeh! In Blade Runner, the PC game, in Early's bar, you go to the area where that teenager is dancing, and one of the tunes played in the background has Rachel saying 'put your hands on me', etc. Anyone else notcied this?

Sure I did. You can hear it clearly. It says put your hands on me like 3 or 4 times, and then sings "touch me". I wonder if, given that Sean Young was involved in the game, did she 'sing' that song?

You guys should read 'Future Noire' - there's four and a half pages about this scene (for those that have it - page 162, "Rachael lets down her hair").

I'm not going to reproduce it here, but here's a few key points:

Harrison Ford and Sean Young hated each other in reality

Hampton Fancher didn't want a 'love' scene in his movie script

Ridley wanted to depict a 'rough' encounter

The original sequence is a lot longer and actually turns into a much more tender scene than the final edit suggests

My own opinion is that the scene, in it's current form, doesn't fit the moment - the longer version shows Rachael with her legs wrapped around Deckard - no chance of that being restored for the 'special edtion', then..

_________________

The difference between the impossible and the possible is equal to the difference between today and tomorrow.

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2001-10-28 05:21 ]

I don't want to be the over-the-top one here, but that scene was disturbing.
It does a great thing in the movie, though.
It was highly reminiscent of slave rape during the US slave-trade. It's clear that Deckard is imposing his power on Rachel during this scene. He is in physical and mental control of her for those moments.
That is why, friends and neighbors, the happy crappy ending is even more disturbing. Deckard asserts his ownership and then runs off with her because he "loves" her? She doesn't even have full emotional capability at that time...
It's every feminist's worst-case scenario of marriage.
