Where is Speilberg going?

Well if Spielberg's trying his hand at Sci Fi legacy, maybe he should attempt "Man in the High Castle" or Ubik" next.

Maybe I'm missing something. So mayber Spielberg is a tad saccharine for PKD books, is that the only reason this forum is against him?

To be honest, I am not a big fan of Spielberg. Encounters on the 3rd phase was an intersting display of lights and sounds, but I get little from it (maybe I should watch it again), I mean what's the point of the movie? Aliens are friendly (which he would go about again in ET) and like bright lights. Well, so aliens are friendly, and... ??? They'll teach us and make us a happy planet? It stops there. ... Now that I wrote that, I'm sure I have to watch it again.<BR> <BR>I never watched E.T. to this date, and I feel I'm missing nothing, I found the character unbelievable and silly even when I was a 6 year old kid. The flying bicicles, never impressed me that much (a good scene, I admit). After all these years I know the general plot, and I think it would bore me to death. I can't think of it as science fiction, and I don't think Spielberg meant it to be. Just a family movie.<BR><BR>Jaws, it was a stupid movie that brought irrational hate and fear to an amazing species. I never read the book, and don't know how faithful was the film to it, but I think that story was constructed on the basis of total ignorance about the animal and its habits. A weak try to take the Moby Dick theme and get it "modern" and scarier for the 80's audience. Unfortunately for the sharks on earth seas, it succeeded.<BR><BR>What I like most of Spielberg's work is the Indiana Jones saga, I love it. But when it comes to serious themes, IMHO, Spielberg fails. With the exception of Schindler's list, his movies don't seem to touch me. (I haven't seen the Purple Color, nor Amistad) <BR><BR>Back to SF, Brian Aldiss' Supertoys tales are not the best of him -and are not bad- but you could've made a better film out of them. At least, I'm sure Stanley Kubrick could. And I read how hard Aldiss and Stanley tried on it without getting satisfied. I liked AI, but I think Spielberg put too much of Pinocchio in it. If he wanted to remake Pinocchio on a futuristic set, he did good. But I don't feel the strenght of the human vs. artificial and what is what theme. <BR><BR>About Minority Report, I say it was good, but not good enough. I don't know if it has something to do with Tom Cruise's face, but not for a second in that film I doubted he was going to save the day, get the girl and live happily ever after. It would've rocked if the film ended when Anderton was frozen and the girl was put back in the tank. But I guess Steven finds it too hard to compromise with that kind of ending for a film. <BR> <BR>Spielberg is a cinematographic entertainer, and he's good at it, just as good as Isaac Asimov is a literary entertainer within the science fiction genre. I can enjoy their works, but in general I find them somewhat light. I think Spielberg directing fits to the style of many Asimov's robot tales. Don't get me wrong, I like Asimov, but you can't compare his writing to Phil Dick's, as you can't compare Spielberg's filming with Kubrick's. <BR><BR>I think Ridley Scott had the potential to become such a master, but didn't totally developed it. After the making of Blade Runner he got progressively 'hollywoodized' (Spielbergized?) to the point we see in Gladiator. I can't imagine how Blade Runner would have been if directed by Spielberg... and I hope Rid doesn't mess up the new BR Special Cut and get it full of CGI. <BR><BR>

As much as I agree with sveral points you've made, I tend to doubt Ridley's going to add any CGI into Blade Runner. The only CGI i think he might use is to cover the wires lifting the spinner into the air. That's all. Now sure he'll re-edit, move some stuff around, maybe tweak some dialogue, but above all, i think the major differences will be scene-shifting, and possibly a new soundtrack (Dolby Digital 5.1 or, if we're extremely lucky, DTS 5.1). If Ridley Scott did this, included some never seen since 1982 footage and wrapped it all up in an enticing 3 disc package, I will de a happy man. I would like nothing more than to see my favorite movie of all time presented in a well thought-out 3 disc DVD set.
