Go have a look at the scene again. Deckard starts rough, but realises it and holds his hands up, as in "I'm sorry". Even in the trimmed version that finally made it into the film, Rachael does end up talking to Deckard unprompted. To me, it seems he has a mixture of emotions that he can't deal with (works whether you think he is human or replicant). But he doesn't want to treat her like a machine. However he does want to help her get past the thing she said just before - that she can't trust her feelings. So he prompts her to say what he knows she is feeling and as I said - she ends up saying it unprompted. I find it difficult to understand how anyone sees it as anything remotely like rape after that. And she's still there the next morning, sleeping peacefully - hardly what you would expect after being forced to do anything.

Maybe throwing Rachael around was a way of Deckard saying "OK, I'm still the human I'm the better one, yeah you're a hottie but I'm still in control. You're not getting the better of my emotions."

Questions, comments?

I too have always felt "uncomfortable" about that scene. It is also a really powerfull scene that gives the film a lot of the Noir feel. The women I know have also given it mixed reviews. Some say it is basically "rape"...others have said it is "really hot".either way it adds alot of tension to the movie which was really important. I would like to see the extended version.

i dont know if shoving ur girlfriend or wife into the wall will get things heated, unless its what ur into lol tht was a little sick but seriously Deckard just wanted to get down to business. although he could have been a gentler. (?) maybe?

Another moral dilemma - in the BR universe, Replicants are seen as 'machines'. Can you rape a machine? Can a Replicant go to the police and accuse someone of rape? I doubt it - in this reality, Replicants are not humans and therefore are not afforded human rights.

Rutger's opinion is that Deckard "F**ked a washing-machine." - not the words that I would choose, but there you go.

P.S. Don't give me a hard time with this - I'm just putting a point of view forward from the perspective of the characters in the Blade Runner universe, not condoning the act of rape involving two human beings...

I dont get it, for it to be a rape he must force her to sexual intercourse he DOES NOT, he forces her to stay (he shuts the door right?) and forces a kiss.. no rape, drop all that bullshit please, i dont see her fighting him off like she`s totally NOT interested in him (and the scene shows that she acctually is..)

Sure he`s pushy, he knows she`s a rep and doesnt have experience, im sure im not the only guy here thats been pushy once or twice, not saying ive forced anyone to anything, sometimes people needs a little push.

I know a lot of women that think that scene is "HOT"...and they like to be pushed around in the context of sexual "play". When i was young and Naive I thought that scene was tantamount to rape, but I have learned a lot since then.

I always consider it not only the fact that Deckard knows she is a replicant, and therefore incapable of some complex emotional conflict that would arise in such a situation, but also that... well, maybe he hadn't gotten any in a while. It was a bit of sexually charged aggression. I thought that scene fit perfectly...

I suppose the 'problem' with the scene is that Deckard used to have a wife and is therefore comfortable with the 'physical' side of a relationship. Rachel has no experience of this and one could argue that Deckard is pushing Rachel into a situation that she isn't mentally prepared for and therefore uncomfortable with. You could argue that Deckard has an unfair advantage over Rachel and that he is forcing the issue when it's obvious that Rachel is very unsure about her own emotions at this point in their relationship.

I do wonder about Deckard's state of mind at this point - having just reconsidered his actions, I wonder if he really is seeing her more as a 'machine' under his control than a near-human being and that he becomes aggressive when the 'machine' decides to go against his wishes. Perhaps he's testing himself - to be a Blade Runner you have to look at the Replicants as 'machines' - not living beings. You couldn't do the job if you empathized with your quarry, so perhaps Deckard is fighting back those feelings knowing full well that it may affect his ability to finish the job of retiring the rest of the Replicants.

I concur. The scene was originally dubbed as a "Hate Scene" for both the cast and crew, although some consider it "touching". I remember it was referred several times in the book Future Noir.
