Okay, Here goes.

I had this really good responce typed up and it would have shown you what I mean, but uinfortunatly, I lost it

So pretty much here's what I'm saying:

I agree with you Deck, I just got things a little mixed.

Turn to page I think it is 285 in my edition and you will see a quote from PKD explaining that his VK worked because the androids had no empathy. Now you see, my error was in using the work emotion instead of empathy. The reps in BR had stacks of empathy (Batty at the end, Batty and Pris's love, Leon's "precious Photo's" etc.) Whilst PKD's Andy's mutilated precious spiders for fun, when it was clearly causing Isadore emotional pain. This is what I've been trying (and failing) to say. Am I reprieved? someone? Anyone?

What about this one. Do you guys believe that the human race will deteriorate so much morally by the year 2019???

Paul

[ This Message was edited by: Paul G on 2001-11-05 01:41 ]

There seems to be some confusion here. The Reps have emotions - this is not open to debate - they have emotions in the book and in the film. The V-K test measures various bodily reactions that represent their emotional responses to questions that are supposed to create an emotional response. Again this is the same.

The whole point of the V-K test is to relate these measurements to empathy. Empathy is NOT just emotional responses. Empathy means relating to other living creatures. The emotional responses of the Reps are programmed. The emotional responses of Humans are real. With empathy, the Humans react automatically to certain questions whereas the Reps go through programmed processing to create their emotional response. Hence the time difference that the V-K machine measures.

Now, the Reps do have emotions, but they are still in early development. The big question is, does Roy get to the point, at the end of the film where he really does have empathy? And does this mean that all Reps have this potential, hence the four-year lifespan that stops them before they get there? After all, both in book and movie, the test for humanity is empathy - if the Reps get to the pount where they have developed empathy, then they are technically human...?
