IMHO

First...Deckard is losing grip...making struggling and breathing noises. Then spits up at Roy. Then he releases to his fall.

Roy reacts with a "Ha!" Then yells "Catch!" as he indeed catches Deckard.

One can certainly construe the term "kinship" out of the movie, as well as "kingship". However, remember that Hauer has an accent.

I just watched it. He does yell "Catch" very quickly, but it's followed by the strange grunt that sounds like "kinship".

This movie can never pick a side. I love it!

The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like the 'grunt' noise that is made when you clench your stomache muscles and diaphram trying not to get a hernia. Listen to power weight lifters just before the put the weight over their head.

I guess it doesn't matter what the 'final' answer is, like everything else in this movie the veiwers/fans will have strong personal preferences that can not be swayed. Long enough for another 25 years at least I hope.

Assuming the poll was supposed to read "Kinship" and not "Kinsman", I voted yes, because I've always heard it (clear as day). Maybe I just misheard it the first time and I'll always hear it like that from there on. Until I hear officially that Rutger didn't say it and it was not added in in post, I'll probably continue to hear it. I'm hoping a commentary or special feature might shed some light on this, as I would like to know one way or the other.

I've never noticed that. I've always heard 'Catch!'. Yesterday I listened very careful to this scene and yes, it sounds a bit like 'kinship'. But I've never noticed it before.

If Rutger said that he's pretty sure he didn't said 'kinship', than he didn't. Clear as that. He really remembers things from more than 30 years ago as yesterday.

I think as most people and Hauer himself it is just a grunt noise. And for the accent part; it is nothing Dutch either. (assuming that he still thinks in Dutch and not in English, if you catch someone it would be very likely that a word from your native language escapes from your mouth. Even when you're acting it is still a possibility. )

I am 100% certain that Batty says "Ah, Kinship, UHH!" Scott probably added it in post-production.

It's a vocal exertion, nothing more. If you sneak up behind me and scare me, I might yell "HUAH!!!". Does that mean I said "Who a"? Of course not - I simply made a vocal noise in a period of stress. Really, listen closely to how many sounds you and the people around you make in a day that aren't words. Or if that ain't good enough, listen to how many sounds the characters in ALIEN make that aren't words - clearly, Ridley is a big fan of this sort of visceral performance, and less concerned with the printed page.

Not to mention, it's dramatically stupid to have Batty yell "kinship!" when he grabs Deckard. By that line of thinking, you might as well have Deckard yell "boobies!" when Zhora comes out of the shower.

Guess what. People have opinions. The debate will go on until we're all implanted with Communist chips.

Why is it such a problem that some people, including myself, hear this line? I'm not telling you that you must now hear, just that I hear it. I don't expect you to change what you believe and I appreciate if you do me the same courtesy. I've also explained why I think the line would fit the scene in another topic, why then is my interpretation "stupid"?

Thank you. I'm also hoping there is a definite answer on the DVD (I don't care if I'm right or just hearing things, I just want to know either way too, heh)

Why does everybody have to have a definitive answer to everything? What is the fun in that?
