Harrison Talks about Blade Runner!

Don't know if this has been mentioned but on april 4th BBC1 broadcast the first episode of their new 'Hollywood Greats' series in which chat show host Jonathon Ross spoke with Harrison Ford about his career.

At one point he discusses Blade Runner and claims to have 'made his peace' with the movie. They don't dwell on BR too much but theres a little input from Sean Young and Darryl Hannah and Harrison addresses the Replicant 'issue'. I edited this segment of the show out and you can get it below (you'll need Quicktime). Maybe of interest to non-UK BR fans.

I'm seeding the show on UKNOVA for anyone who wants to see the whole thing.

I knew about the "in fighting" about the movie. But interesting to see that harrison liked the idea that Deckard was human and not a Replicant.

Hey Nails.

Do an article anyway! (transcript with screenshots?)

It is newsworthy, i suppose. He doesn't say much we don't already know but its the most recent example of him chatting about BR on camera.

He's pretty magnanimous in the clip but i still don't think we're ever going to get a HF commentary on DVD.

The video is obviously free to any webmasters/BR fans to do with as they wish!

That's great! Thank you so much, Precint! =D>

Much as I tried, I couldn't understand the first sentence from that Severus Snape interviewer guy... what did he say?

After repeated viewings of what could be called "the missing bit in 'On the edge of Blade Runner' documentary", (which I haven't seen, BTW) I somewhat picked up what the interviewer said, it wasn't his first comment but the second one as you can see, for I didn't get all of it (is that an accent or he just speaks too fast for me?). So, here's what I did this afternoon:

--------------------------------------------
[Narrator] In 1982, Ford retuned to sci-fi in Blade Runner, playing a cop on the trail of killer replicants who were indistinguishable from humans. Now considered a cult classic, it was a problematic production, with the star, studio and director Ridley Scott arguing over the content of the film.

[Film excerpt: Rachael's VK Test]

HF: ?I've made my peace with Blade Runner whether there was a bitter unhappiness between myself and Ridley, and Warner Brothers to be fair, at the... at the end of the film they took the film away from Ridley, that's when the, ah, voiceovers began to be generated by a, by a variety of different writers, none of them apparently wrote something which satisfied the studio and their need for explanation of what was going on. So I was very dissapointed that we had to do a voiceover.

Snape: ?It's a less subtle, less sophisticated movie than the one which you [??'d been hoping you'd??] put out...

HF: I hoped, you know, I hoped we wouldn't need that.

Snape: It's weird, you know, because I always saw it, you know, like the rest of the audiences, only with the voiceover initially, and now seen the restored director's version, and it's kind of impossible for you to remove what the voiceover told you about the film when ????? But both movies, I think, stand out [up?] remarkably well.

HF: Well, they're tremendous, yeah, I mean they're both... either way, it's a huge amount of work and there are some wonderful moments in them.

[Film excerpt: Rachael's VK Test]

Sean Young: He does acknowledge that it's become a kind of cult classic and he does acknowledge the sort of visuals, and he does acknowledge, you know, the unusual characters and things like that, he acknowledges all of those things, it seems, but I don't, I don't really think in his heart of Harry's he is in love with that movie.

[Narrator] Controversy still sourounds the film today, with no one ever agreeing on the definitive version, but at least the fighting is now confined to the screen.

[Film excerpt: Pris attacks]

Darryl Hannah: Not only do I have to, you know, like, you know, crash him with my thighs but I also have to jam my fingers up his nose and lift him up and, you know, smash him back down to the ground and... there was really no other way to do it than just to do it and Harrison's nose was bleeding, and he was just like "just go for it!"

He just wants to do the scene the way it should be played, and if that means he's gonna, you know, have a bloody nose and, you know, a sore head for a while, you know, it's not the worst thing in the world and he can deal with that.

[Film excerpt: Spinner checking on Deckard]

Snape: Can you be drawn on the whole idea behind the ??? of whether or not Deckard is, or is not a replicant?

HF: Well, that was the, that was the main area of contention between Ridley and myself at the time. I thought that the audience deserved one human being on the screen that they could establish an emotional relationship with, and I thought I had won Ridley's agreement to that, but in fact I think he had a little reservation about that. So I think he really wanted to have it both ways.

Or maybe I should learn to read carefully the forum posts, like that one which said that Ford was talking with chat show host Jonathon Ross

You got it 99% right. Ross has a pretty stong 'cockney' accent and also a speech impediment (he tends to pronounce 'R' like 'W' - 'jonathon woss'.

I did him a bit of a diservice in describing him as a 'chat show host', he is also the presenter of the UKs best known and longest running movie review show (Film 2006) and i believe he's also a huge fan of comics, sci-fi, Japanese Anime and martial arts movies.

Anyway, at the risk of wasting precious bandwidth:

Ah, but did you know that Blade Runner is number two in Jonathan Ross' top ten movies of all time? (Can't remember what his number one is, I'll try and find the link)

Ah, hang on a sec, here is the link.

Fellini's "8 1/2" was his number one...

I never knew BR was "taken away" from Ridley near the end of the production. Sounds much like what happened to THX 1138. WB took it, messed with it (cut 5 minutes out and rearranged some scenes) and it totally ruined the original concept. I guess that's what you get for working with a major studio.
