The BladeZone SETI Project
The sound you hear is a radio signal from deep space which could possibly contain a transmission from extraterrestrial beings. You could help discover alien life. SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is a scientific area whose goal is to detect intelligent life outside Earth. One approach, known as radio SETI, uses radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space. Such signals are not known to occur naturally, so a detection would provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology.
Radio telescope signals consist primarily of noise (from celestial sources and the receiver's electronics) and man-made signals such as TV stations, radar, and satellites. Modern radio SETI projects analyze the data digitally. More computing power enables searches to cover greater frequency ranges with more sensitivity. Radio SETI, therefore, has an insatiable appetite for computing power.
The SETI@home project uses computing software that can run either as a screensaver or continuously while you work, making use of processor power that would otherwise be wasted. It's completely automatic and requires no work on your part after initial setup. Anyone with a computer and Internet access can download this program and participate in the project. This is the latest 3D version of SETI@home graphics featuring a moving starfield and a swiveling/rotating motion.
SETI@home is a project hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory, at the University of California, Berkeley, which analyzes radio signals received by the Aracibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. Launched on 5/17/1999, the SETI@home project now involves more than 1 million personal computers and has logged over 2.5 million years of computer time. It is acknowledged by the Guinness World Records as the largest computation in history.
The BladeZone SETI Project consists of SETI@home users who are also fans of the movie Blade Runner, working toward the common goal of finding evidence of extra-terrestrial intelligence. If you wish to join the project, download the screensaver program and register with SETI@home, then click the 'Join' link and join the group.
