The Last Special Edition

Did anyone buy the last "Special Edition"?

I think it was the Director's cut in 5.1 dolby surround packaged with 8 lobby cards, a script and some other bits.

If you did buy it was the picture quality the same as previous versions, i.e. grainy, or is it a new transfer? I've always assumed it was the same as previous versions (apart from the soundtrack).

I might buy it - although I do think ?69.99 is a bit steep! :-k

Well no, I'm not sure :?

I was looking at the DVD's available from Blockbuster.

This link for the 'vanilla' Director's Cut says:

Technical Details
Screen: Enhanced Widescreen Letterbox, Pan and Scan
Sound: Dolby Digital Surround
Original Aspect Ratio: Cinemascope

and this link for the Special Edition says:

Technical Details
Screen: Pan and Scan, Enhanced Widescreen Letterbox
Sound: 5 full-range channels. Includes 3 front speakers, 2 surround channels for rear speakers, & 1 low-frequency effects (LFE) channel., PCM stereo

You tell me 'cos I don't know :-k

I'm looking at the two items as I write. They appear to be identical. The packaging that contains the discs are exactly alike (the bar-code number is even identical). If there is any difference in the audio between the discs it certainly isn't noted on the packaging.

I've always thought that that was the case - must be Blockbuster's error.

I remeber when i bought mine, i thought it was 5:1, and was dissapointed that it wasnt, im sure i read something like that prior to buying, thinking it was 5:1.

I find it strange that you make a DC version 10 years later and dont bother with the 5:1 sound, very dissapointing :|

[EDIT] The strangest and most dissapointing fact is that the movie is 22 years old, and have not been released on DVD yet, unbeliveble, nooo they release a DC with 2.0 DD... jolly good...

This all boils down to the legal wrangling over who owns the rights - very disappointing for the fans.
