Wow, it's not often that I come across someone who has almost the exact opposite views about a subject that I have. I do think it's a shame that you think that way, emspace.

But hey, we'd have no discussion forum if every thread was full of 'me too's...

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2003-01-25 15:18 ]

I think you made some very good points - my real gripe was with the 'blasphemy' type sentiments.

Of course, you're right about the 'dated' look - only a time traveller could accurately describe the look and feel of the future 40-years-hence. And let's not forget that it was Syd Mead's and Ridley's intention to show a recycled/retro-fitted/dirty future rather than a pristine one.

But, in a way, it's films like Blade Runner that shape the future - perhaps if the movie was never made then the future really would be like that. Sometimes the 'lessons' learned in a good Sci-Fi story are incorporated into real science - I haven't read much Asimov (yet) but I suspect that the 'three laws of robotics' that he proposed in his fiction will somehow be implemented into the artificial-intelligence systems developed today and in the future - I'm surprised Replicants were not 'programmed' to protect rather than harm humans...

...oh, forget that, they were originally manufactured as killing machines (freedom fighters) before World War Terminus devastated the planet and created the need for 'slaves' to tempt people to the off-world colonies.

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2003-01-25 18:41 ]

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2003-01-25 18:50 ]

The film was supposed to have an anacronistic look combing retro 40's with the future. So things are meant to look dated even in the 80's. Also I work for a company that works with 3d photography and already use lenticular technology that isn't far off from the film in the movie that can have both 3d and motion as well as incorporating super flat sound chips. BUT I also agree that it is the emotions inspired by the movie that matter the most.

OT - no 'kinship' confirmation

On a Q&A with Rutger Hauer that I attended to a few months back a guy actually asked him if there was any truth in the kinship myth. Hauer just looked bewildered and wondered whatever may have given him that idea and then stated firmly that Roy does NOT say kinship to Deckard. So... tell your friends

/Martin

Well, thank you! I was thinkin to write to the official Rugter website to ask that (Being more kind with his fans than the avegare film actors, maybe I had some chance), but now you've saved me some time.

NO kinship!

Just been catching up with this forum and was reading this thread with mixed feelings. Ah emspace. One of those people who desperately wants to instruct others how to think while pretending he is not.

There is so much wrong with so many of the things you've said, I hardly know where to begin.

So a few random things. Scientists, engineers, etc. Yes there are some here, but more to the point, there are a number who have quoted this and other films as influencing them to go an create the stuff for real. Such as cameras that can generate images of what is behind a wall - currently already in use.

Speculation as to how things might work is quite fascinating to many people - whether they were intended as predictions or just to help the plot is hardly relevant. The fact that you don't understand that doesn't make it wrong, and saying that it is wrong just shows your lack of understanding of other people.

What of some of Syd Mead's designs for instance. Given that he was creating future designs for the manufacturing industry when introduced to the film industry as a "visual futurist", it is not surprising that much of what he did looked real and even became real in following years, because he was one of the people envisioning it for the industries creating those things. ALL artefacts are imagined before they are created. The fact that you don't understand why people might want to do that does not make it inexplicable - it just means you don't get it.

Aspects of a V-K machine have long been in use, though in the form it is in the movie, it is certainly fictional. Analysing a photo where you can see around corners - again, probably fictional as extrapolating data that isn't there rapidly deteriorates the further you get from actual data. But who knows what type of camera will be common in a decade's time? Throwaway underwater cameras are old news now, but 20 years ago would be quite remarkable. Now we have increasingly high definition digital cameras that are commonplace, but cost thousands not long since. Speculation on how 3 dimensional data might be put into a picture is certainly not out of place and there are answers to how it could be achieved. If that became commonplace, Leon might then have a camera capable of doing it, even if he didn't need the facility.

I think the Rachael photo doesn't literally move, but if someone wants to believe it is a miniclip with electricity supplied by the person's touch, then why not? Someone may go out and create something like that just from being inspired by that speculation.

Does Batty say "Kinship"? I don't know for sure. And neither do you, so your comments are completely out of place and just show up your ignorance. Does Hauer say "Kinship"? Given that his and Scott's recollections of that whole scene and motivation differed quite considerably, many years ago already, their memories are obviously as flawed as the movie indicates all our memories to be! He could quite easily have said it and forgotten because it was not part of the motivation he was thinking, but something Scott just told him to say when they were filming. But it could also be an overdub and Rutger Hauer might never even have said it but Roy Batty did. Just like the photo lies - as it is not always Hauer you see in the photo shots, so many other things can be not what they seem.

What is the real problem here? That you have some personal idealized vision of what all BR fans should be and are getting upset when, oh goodness me, someone is not the same as you? Does it not occur to you that these things might be fun and just possibly that the great people you mention, such as Syd Mead, may very well have started on their route to greatness by doing exactly that sort of thing?

Those that are particpating can have fun doing it. Some might think that creating pictures inspired by BR is completely pointless, or that fan fiction can't match it so why try. Given the evidence of what is on this and otehr BR sites, it seems that some there are some very talented people around. BR has inspired engineers, scientists, architects, artists, designers, writers, filmmakers and more. If some are inspired one way and others another, let us just rejoice that the film can provide so many diverse inspirations.

Hi BRMovie:

If you take a close read of my recent posts, you'll notice I never mentioned the moving photo or the "kinship" issue (or rather non-issue - if Hauer says it didn't happen, that's good enough for me) at all!

A few other points:

There are NOT cameras that can see through walls. Provide proofs for such assertions, or kindly don't make them.

I doubt very much that Syd Mead started his career the way you suggest. I have three books of his work, and not one of them would seem to indicate that he imagines he can describe the technical specifications of any non-existent, imaginary device in his artwork.

Lastly, I do not have an idealized vision of what BR fans should be like. I am just a passionate person, and am passionately expressing my disappointment that forum members think they are somehow on the same level of proficiency and intimacy with the movie that the people who made it are, and more to the point, which you are so studiously ignoring, why anyone GIVES a damn how, for example, the VK works. I am in fact accusing people of focusing their energy on trivia. Since you brought up the "kinship" issue, I ask you: what in hell is the POINT of debating whether or not it was said if it's unprovable? Now, in order to defend your indefensible point, you suggest Hauer's memory might be flawed, or a dub added he was unaware of? As Precinct says, it really isn't any fun running out of things to talk about, is it? Then all you have to fall back on is your enjoyment of the MOVIE, as many times as you see fit to watch it.

If anyone here can design an Esper, or the camera that can record the imagery the Esper interprets, I can personally promise them wealth undreamed of by Midas. Get your butt to the patent office, yesterday if possible. If you can't do this...well, how are you going to DO it?

But that really is enough. I can't imagine what kind of a life you've had that you think it's a crime to try to change people's minds, but I am well and truly out of steam anyway.

big sigh,
peace,
emspace.

To be fair to BRMovie he was replying to several points raised by several people, not just you emspace and I agree with most of what he said.

I can see this is getting a little 'heated' - shall we leave it, now?

Sorry Richard, it will be left. I can certainly understand other people's desire to try to add their efforts to the BR "body of work"; just can't understand why the same courtesy isn't being extended to me and my purist POV...?

oh well,
emspace.

One last thing apropos to the criticisms of BRMovie and others: I am a musician, digital artist, web designer and writer. I make my living primarily as a writer in the film industry (titles/captions, script rewrites etc.).

What I'm trying to say in my own little way is that I am a creative person and always have been. And I want to now distinguish between genuinely creative people and superfans of the "Klingon Dictionary" variety. I want to address the issue of my hypocrisy, and show that I can see both sides of that argument.

Richard, please take down my fan art page. It in no way represents my current level of skill in any case, and I don't need the ego stroke that comes with seeing my art up at someone else's site.

I guess I'm just not as much of a fan as some people here, Syd Mead book collection and vast number of times I've seen the movie notwithstanding. I wouldn't pay thousands of dollars to own a coat worn by Sean Young in BR, for example. I wouldn't spend X number of hours trying to interpret the structure and function of some fiberglass props in a fictional movie made in 1981; to "explain" the products of someone else's imagination!

In short, I don't think I belong in this forum. I have seen the "here's what I can do to expand/change/rewrite/generate controversy over some infinitesimal point of detail in BR" crowd grow from the occasional poster to the majority. I re-checked the "how old will you be in 2019" thread and realized the average age here must be around 22. I am about to buy a new home, and have a baby due in June. I won't have enough time to pursue, for example, my music, to nearly the degree I do now, never mind argue with people about whether or not they have the ability to delineate the technical specs of something that has never existed.

I could literally spend all my spare time trying to get a Tyrrell pyramid just right...or I could move on, which I did LONG ago. So Richard, I'm asking you to tear down the page and revoke my membership. It really is too painful to see some new person asserting that they can ADD something to this great though much-abused film every single time I open the forum.

T-shirt often seen on real film sets: "It's just a f*****g movie".

peace out,
emspace.

Okay Richard, I certainly wasn't intending prolonging any negativity. And as you said, I was replying to several people's points - given that each have taken offence at parts directed at the other, I obviously was lacking in my clarity, for which I apologise.

So, I'll keep this short(ish). I stand by all that I said (including cameras that can generate images of what is behind a wall - I didn't say "see through" the wall). I didn't say how Syd actually started, just that some like him do start by doing fan work. I thought I was clear, not ignoring the point, that some people give a damn just because it is fun. It is one thing to argue a perspective, but simply calling those with different POVs "idiots" just because one doesn't understand why they would want to do something is not intelligent debate. As for "Kinship", I said I didn't know if he said it or not and was just defending the right of people to consider the possibility that it might be said and how it might be there even if Rutger didn't say it. The literal truth may not matter to our lives, but this is a discussion forum, so why not discuss?

I am not upset about anything actually, just inviting people to be open to others enjoying BR fandom how they want to. And incidentally, I am 40 with a family, my own company and other hobbies. I see no reason not to spend what time I do enjoying BR and the many different contributions of fans.

[ This Message was edited by: BRmovie on 2003-01-28 07:44 ]
