About the original thread topic - I think some organising is required.

I'm not entirely sure I know who's doing what, what has been achieved so far etc.

Is someone managing this? Can we have a recap on progress? Has anyone actually started any of this?

Yes, I know I'm partly to blame for the 'fog' in this thread. Sorry.

EMMSPACE: no fooense take....

i feel the same way as you do, which is why im doing this project (yes, i started this project) to a certain limit and extent. like i said, i feel the same way as you do...i used to be a HUGE HUGE HUGE star wars fan, until they crushed the movies with all those books and games, that just destroy what it was, and manipulate it to fit each writter of the books and games. now, the movies are ok, butim not a huge fan anymore because its now way way way out of line. i too,(your not alone) dont want blade runner to end up like this.

if anyone has has any questions, im the starter of this project, and i hope to be able to keep things organized, but there's not much to organize.

and about the 3d esper thing emmspace: thats what the tech manual is for, to explain how things work. i read something on some blade runner site somewhere, damn my memory i forgot, but it said something like NASA is working on something like the esper machine, a single photo with 3d photo imaging thingy.
Okay - the way forward is research. In order to create an 'authentic' looking tech manual you have to ground the entire thing in real science. After all, this is essentially what Sci-Fi is; taking an accepted scientific principle and projecting it into the future.

In order to produce a blueprint for the Esper machine you have to break it down into discreet units of functionality.

The Esper machine is essentially the LAPD criminal intelligence mainframe - Deckard has a 'client' in his home and his car. Both are 'served' by the LAPD mainframe. This type of 'architecture' is common today.

In the movie, Deckard's Esper client demonstrates the following components:

Hardware:

-Visual display unit (monitor)
-Media reader (scanner)
-Hard copy device (printer)

-Connection between client/server (implied)

Software:

-3D Image analysis software
-Voice recognition software

There are also additional dials/buttons/indicator lights which serve some, as yet undetermined, purpose.

Additional functionality is mentioned in various 'official' Blade Runner literature - I'll have to re-read it at some point...

Also, the Blade Runner game presents a very plausible model of an evidence collection database. The way that clues are collected and cross-referenced in order to draw conclusions is, I suspect, based on how detectives work today (and have always worked).

Most of the technology outlined above exists now - the only question mark is the 3D-photo technology. That will require further research.

It's possible that the photo that Deckard analyzes may contain an entire series of images. When he looks at Racheals photo it 'moves' like a video sequence. Perhaps the camera that takes these images isn't a still image camera, but a video camera. The actual photo produced could be some sort of magnetic storage media encased by a 'disposable' LCD display unit that plays back the content of the photo when handled. The entire Esper sequence could in fact be an analysis of a video sequence, where the photographer/cameraman was actually walking around the scene taking video footage or a sequence of still images. The Esper machine could then rebuild the entire scene in 3D and allow Deckard to virtually 'walk' around the room as if he was there. This sort of image manipulation is possible today - The Matrix special effects use this sort of technique where 'tweening' is used to 'fill in' the gaps beteen two images taken from slightly different view points.

So there you have it - the basis for the entire Esper sequence explained.

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2003-01-17 07:24 ]

Did any of that sound plausible?

Shall we move onto the next piece of technology?

How about the VK machine?

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2003-01-20 17:36 ]

there's a REAL version of the esper machine being developed by NASA, called omniview or omniviewer. ill get some info on how that works.

good work deckard, ill find some uses on those extra buttons and controls on the esper.

the vk would be next. i just need some diagrams of the esper and i'l write some additional info on the esper machine, like how its only a small terminal that connects to the kia mainframe computer. the rest was done by deckard,

somewhere I own a poleroid film camera that hooks up to a computer directly to the video card. I will have to watch the movie closely to see if that is what they use to make the "hard copy" of Zhora from the esper.

Well, I'm sorry. To me, Blade Runner is as much about technology as it is about the 'human' condition.

The development of technology fascinates me - Sci-Fi is a wonderful arena to explore the future of existing technologies and the affect that it may have on the society we live in.

The Rachael photo is irrelavent - whether it's a moving image or not, it doesn't make much difference to the 'fact' that Deckard is able to 'walk through' Leon's photo and see things that only a 3-dimensional representation could show you - now if you don't care about that, then fine. I myself find it very exciting and look forward to the day when I will be able to own such a piece of equipment.

You seem to be saying that we musn't think about anything we see in the cinema - we must just accept it for what it is. Seems like a bit too much of a 'passive' experience to me and goes against what Sci-Fi should do, which is to raise as many questions as it attempts to answer...in other words, it makes you think.

This concept of 'leaving it alone' really bothers me.

BTW, you won't win many friends by calling fellow fans 'idiots'.

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2003-01-25 09:44 ]

I think it is a good thing that this movie speeks to so many different people in different ways. It sounds to me like someone might feel insecure about being viewed as a geek. Remember Christian Slater has professed himself a Star Trek geek. I dont think his fandom has prevented him from getting laid and neither has it me. so find "coolness" within. Not from what you are a fan of.

I've never really accepted the term 'geek' - it seems to be aimed at anyone who shows outward signs of intelligence - this is somehow frowned upon in todays society.

People seem to forget that it's the 'geeks' of this world that created most of the wonderful labour-saving devices that enable you to spend more of you're free time talking about geeks...

"Im just opposed to the kind of crazy extrapolation of ideas..."

Precinct, you 'n' me both - check out my earlier posts.

I don't think anyone does these things because they want to profit from BR. I think they do them because the technology is far more important to them than the emotional experience of the film's story, or even the REAL visual glory of all those wonderful Ridleytubes and fiber-optic light sources. They, as Richard says, feel there is something missing, and feel it's incumbent upon them to fill in the "holes". I don't give a rat's bum what NASA is doing, they are not making cameras that can see through walls or around doors. We will not have them in 16 years either. There is no way to extrapolate a woman's arm out of a wall - as the maxim goes, if it isn't in the image, it can't be made visible. Leon is not going to buy a snpashot camera that uses MRI technology (not that it would work anyway, or will ever be portable) so he can take pics of his fellow escapees lounging at the Yukon Hotel.

So, beyond the fact that you guys are inexplicably focusing your energies on all these IMAGINARY artefacts, all your "explanations" will be plain silly! Are there are quantum physicists in the crowd? Aeronautical engineers? I don't doubt there's good artists, but what's the point? You're not as good as the guys who designed the movie, or you'd be working in the industry instead of being fans of it.

Anyway, final word as always: go ahead and enjoy, but don't expect everyone to get it. To quote Precinct again, "It kind of taints the whole legacy of BR to treat it in the same manner as a bunch of other stupid sci fi films with which it clearly doesn't belong."

peace,
emspace
