...And then there was only The Final Cut on shelves :)

A minor thought...one that might seem totally anticlimactic and even irrelevant to some, but still, maybe that's part of why it's special to me.

While running errands last weekend, I swung through a local Target department store to pick up some personal necessities, and opted to take a few minutes and stroll through the DVD video section of the store to see if I ran into anything new or noteworthy (Target's being at the near-bottom of my list as far as illustrious places to peruse for new media, you understand). I glanced over some DVD titles, a few new, a few old, a few priced to move...and then I saw it:

The simple, no-frills 2-DVD set of Blade Runner: The Final Cut. All on its own, unadorned with any fanfare or special promotions, priced at a consumer-friendly $14.99.

And it honestly just really moved me to see it sitting there so unremarkably and mixed in with everything else. Because above all, it meant to me that Ridley Scott FINALLY got his definitive version of BR onto mass-market shelves in mainstream department stores, where people old and young who have never seen or heard of BR before will see it for the first time in its very finest possible version; and, if they're thrilled by what they've just seen, they can also toss on the second disc with the jaw-droppingly stupendous Dangerous Days documentary, and a whole new universe of BR might just beckon forth to them: "holy moly, I had no @#$% idea that this movie had THIS much history to it!!"

Please don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not saying goodbye to BladeZone; this forum and the folks here mean the world to me. But I think I was partially so moved by the moment described above, because it almost felt like I'd come full circle in a way with the entire Blade Runner experience that all of us here have been through over the last few years, of having heard rumors and gossip and occasional brief acknowledgements of Scott's revisiting BR to finally create his ultimate, truly definitive edition of the movie (not to mention taking all the time and efforts necessary to create an exhaustive Special Edition DVD set for the ages, which we now have thanks to C.D. Lauzirika & Co.) There were many years when I know almost all of us here at BladeZone probably just said, "ah, to hell with it, it's never going to happen," and just wrote it off as another one of our top ten ardent-movie-enthusiast pipe dreams.

But it really DID happen, all of it. After all our decades of shared enthusiasm and devotion (and a few years of patience ), our BR dreams really did come true, and totally beyond our wildest hopes. And now they're sitting inconspicuously on a shelf at your local department store at the priced-to-move rate of $14.99, for us to share with our friends and loved ones, and for everyone else to discover for the very first time. How unbelievably sweet that is.

Another reflective and insightful post from dmohrUSC. Very nice :)

I don't want to take anything away from it, but I wanted to mention that I saw the 2-disc FC for $14.99 @ Walmart way back at the beginning of the year. Pretty much right after it's release. Didn't see any other versions, though.

Thanks for the nice words, Gene. Obviously, I know I'm not the first person in the world who's ever noticed the 2-DVD Final Cut set in stores. All I'm saying is, there was just something really touching about it having been many months later after all the press, publicity and fanfare of the Final Cut's release on DVD, and just walking through a big generic department store, and seeing The Final Cut sitting there like any other movie, but knowing the version of BR that's now on all those shelves in all those cities was the one that Ridley Scott could finally look at and say, "there it is, that's my baby, finally just as I wanted her to be...and now everyone else can see her just as I wanted her to be seen too."

Well said, dmohrUSC! It gives me the same fuzzy feeling it gives you.

In fact, I'd describe the feeling as the exact opposite of what I feel when I see Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi on the shelf! :P

I have this weird thing; every time when I walk through a dvd/music store I look on the shelves at the 'B' section and try to find Blade Runner. If they have one I put it in front of the other dvd's.
It's something I simply need to do.

It's a leftover thing from the years I kept searching for this movie and couldn't find it. It was horror.
Now every time I see the BR final cut dvd it makes me smile. :D

Whenever I see them in the stores I become greed-envious and have the desire to buy them all!

Exceptionally well said, dmohrUSC! While I am new to BladeZone I certainly went through very similar thoughts, desires and other feelings over the years. (And no, I didn't "develop my own emotional responses" :) ) Thanks for that post!

How do you know it isn't the other way around. I have already been called my own evil twin ;)...

So did you catch the Final Cut at the Dryden? I had been begging them to get it for a long time knowing thay had some fans that work there. One of them told me that my begging not only helped them get it, but also replay it on Sunday :D...still not sure if I believe him because like I said they have a few fans that work there, and I know they beg enough for me. Saturday was a sellout and Sunday came very close to selling out. I only wish they were playing it the whole week.

As far as the original topic, I look everyplace I go and check to see it on the shelves. It is a kind of reassurance for sure. It is even cooler when I find BR related stuff in unexpected places.

Hmmm, you've got me there (by 2 to 1 apparently. LOL)

No, I am afraid I don't get out much. But I just looked up their web page for future reference. Thanks!

Sorry to hijack this thread one more time, but you should get out more. I often hang out at a hipster joint called Lux to play pool (usually Wednesday nights), and every time I have one of my Blade Runner T shirts there I have been told by many people what a great movie they think it is. Many of the Bartenders especially have told me it is there favorite film. I sold one of them my extra Spinner44 Roy t-shirt and now he seems to wear it all the time. It is inhabited by artists, musicians and even some film makers so it would make sense that it is so popular there. It actually has the feel of a BR scene at times with "Punks" and many wearing vintage clothing there at all times. If you ever decide to venture out drop me an email.

 I can't argue with that, but with a job, side job/hobby, two teenage girls, and a stepdaughter with her 1 year old son living with us it is not as easy as it sounds.

Sounds very interesting. Sincere thanks for the offer & I may do so!
