Nick and the Glimmung, Ubik screenplay (Subterranean Press)

"We?ve reached agreement to publish two of Philip K. Dick?s works. The first, Nick and the Glimmung, is a YA sf novel making its first US appearance, and first publication anywhere in nearly 20 years. The second is Dick?s own screenplay adaptation of his novel Ubik, which appeared from a small press in the mid-eighties, and has been out of print since. We?re still in the process of selecting an artist for the YA novel, but Ubik: the Screenplay, will sport a cover by Dave McKean."

No release date has been announced.

Ubik: the Screenplay
By Philip K. Dick
(preorder--to be published in August 2008)

Dust jacket by Dave McKean.
Foreword by Tim Powers.
Afterword by Tad Williams.

Trade Hardcover: $35
ISBN: 978-1-59606-169-9

Lettered Edition: $150

Subterranean Press is proud to make Philip K. Dick's screenplay adaptation of one of his signature novels available for the first time in more than twenty years. Copies of the first edition of Ubik: the Screenplay now fetch more than $100 on the collector's market, when you can find them. In addition, the screenplay features an ending that differs markedly from that of the novel.

"Dick included far more parenthetical description and interpretation than can be standard for screenplays, and so we have here his considered, after-the-fact portraits of Glen Runciter, Ella Runciter, Joe Chip, Pat Conley, and Ubik itself. And too, with a facility that's scarce among novelists, he smoothly adapts his story to the wider, deeper ranges of the film medium. The Ubik 'ads' are much more effective as actual intrusions than as chapter headings, the soundtrack becomes a central element (and makes us wonder what music Dick would have chosen to complement some of his other novels), and he presents the dysfunctions in time and perception even more effectively when he imagines them enacted on a movie screen. In some ways, in fact, it almost seems as though we're getting a purer version of UBIK—something closer to the original conception than the text of the novel."

-- Tim Powers, from his foreword

Trade: 1500 cloth bound hardcover copies
Lettered: 26 leatherbound copies, signed by the authors of the introduction and afterword, housed in a custom traycase

Subterranean Press is proud to present one of Philip K. Dick's rarest works, appearing for the first time in a U.S. edition.

Nick has a problem. He has a cat named Horace, and cats are quite illegal on Earth. In fact all pets are illegal on Earth, and Horace has been reported to the anti-pet man. The only way for Nick and his family to keep Horace is to emigrate to Plowman’s Planet.

Little did they know that, rather than the pastoral paradise Nick’s father envisioned, they would land in the middle of a planetwide war against an entity known as Glimmung, a conflict in which Nick and Horace would play a pivotal role.

Nick and the Glimmung is Philip K. Dick’s sole surviving young adult novel. Written in 1966, it shares elements with his novel Galactic Pot-Healer and is available for the first time in the U.S, and the first time anywhere in twenty years.

Nick and the Glimmung will be available only from Subterranean Press, in two unique editions:
