Wow - I'm surprised by all those who hadn't noticed Deckard spitting at Batty!

I always felt it was a powerful image from the first time I saw the film.

Deckard has one last, desperate curse for his (super)human adversary. It's his way of saying "you've beaten me, but I won't go out with a whimper."

I believe this action by Deckard influenced Batty to save him.

I too am surprised that so many did not notice this in the scene. I noticed it the very first time. However I do not agree that this is what influenced Roy to save Deckard. It most certainly must have been his certain impending doom that brought about this philanthropic gesture. He saw his own life slipping away and wished to preserve another's life. He knew he was already beaten by the internal alarm clock he carried and this inspired his benevolent salvation of the Blade Runner. All life, memories, sentient consciousness became sacred and holy in his final moments. It was a religious happening and Hauer's portrayal of it (according to Sammon) moved the entire crew. Roy became the loving god bestowing life unlike the imperfect creator who had made him so short lived.
