Why weren't they mentioned/discussed in the book?

thats a good point m8, after hearing about these extensive re-edits and cuts, i went straight into the future-noir book, and yes... there is absolutely no mention of them, almost on purpose?!?

the book goes into lengthy and vivid detail about scenes like batty in the beginning on the off-world furnice, or the elaborate snake pit scenr that was not shot (at the time..) but does not give anything away of the `other scenes`

Future Noir was cut down by 300 pages.

Also, it makes sense that Paul didn't list all of the deleted material. He may not have known what it was.

It's not that difficult.

i do wonder what the powers at be at scott-free make of all our thoughts. Perhaps even taking the odd bit of guidance through what fans/members of this forum come up with. Its a shame that some threads have been started about different version being available and how to obtain them, but that is life, and the price of freedom of speech.

I`ve played director myself on many occasions, using merely my personal copy of Adobe premiere pro, and a public domain utility to rip DVD`s and store them as .avi files so i can re-cut films and make them my way. my last re-cuts have been The Beach, Hannibal and Enter the dragon. Sometimes the directors commentary gives a real good insigfht nito film making, though generally i dont agree with exclusions in directors cuts, i.e. time restraints should not be a factor with a dorectors cut. The bog standard 90 minute audience captive version has been, leaving a directors version with a captive audience that doesnt want the film to end - with every possible and concievabe shot used. (that might sound out of place, but would you watch a version of blade runner that was say an hour extra? damn right you would, and you would love even to see the same shots again at different angles, not because its any better, but because it makes your favorite film even more interesting).

The beach was my personal favorite, as re-inserting a totally new beginning featuring the thai newyear celebration ment alot to the family, being they just came back from phu-ket (or however you spell it). Hannibal was a tricky one as i recal, as the extra scene when barney comes to the house is in the wrong order (he approaches the house in the beginning though the boars have already arrived). Finally Bruce lees enter the dragon (actually my first, some 15 years ago) the source extra footage was 4:3, but the feature was 16:9 letterbox. with the use black bars i merged the 2 together, generating the feel that the film was being panned out.

Its funny, but although i never filmed the source footage, i found myself in the directors shoes, storyboarding, piecing together and previewing scenes into the early hours, untill i was satisfied with the results. I`ve no doubt in my mind, that when (if?) any sort of new version is released, i will make an effort to re-insert scenes. Ive often wondered why the extra scenes are of a different ratio? is it really to stop us from producing something better? or maybe a simple answer like restoring takes extra money?

Ive heard that apple edting software is top of the tree, but ive found adobe premiere pro to be more than adequate for me, cuts edit, fade wipes dissolves and interpolation to name but a few. if you cast your mind back to the blade runner demo of alternate scenes i released ages ago, the biggest problem was ratios. but it didnt deter me, and gave people an insight to blade runner lost scenes.

Ridley has yet to knock on my door and ask for help with his re-cut, but the door is ajar :)

On the note of ratios...

Let's look at two movies whose deleted scenes are of different AR:

Apocalypse Now

Godfather

In AN's case, while the workprint is in 2:35, all DVD versions are in the 2:21 format. The reasoning on the home movie re-framing was some kind of crap.

In Godfather's case, most of the cut footage was taken directly from the TV versions. Lazy.

I'm going to assume Blade Runner's deleted footage will match the rest of the movie, though.

FFC`s redux version of Apocalypse Now is an absolute must for any film aficionado. This version fits quite well with my previous post, that being the later version has no time restraints, and lets this new captive audience see new twists and plots that previous versions couldn`t possibly contain. Though for me, the french plantation scene was long and tedious, it added new depths to the film, expanding the possibilities that its not just the Colonel that has gone insane.

So how does all of this fit into BR`s case? well, for sure none of us know, (apart from charles...) and, like always, we can only assume. The obvious one is always time. Somebody out there must have done a study, and the results of that study have pointed that the audience goes asleep after 90 minutes. (would i really have watched all 3+ hours of lord of the rings, if i knew it was going to run that long?!). Time is not the only reason for edits, over kills or too much information or over explanation can also kill the audience. Let us not forget that the initial feedback from the BR viewing back in the 80`s, was that the audience didnt understand what was going on. *

So, assuming Ridley has long ago had his re-think, and carefully watched all of the cuts and edits found in the holy grail BR box (the one marked `to be destroyed` in the vaults at Burbank), The director not only has new resources, but has a totally new kind of audience to give it to. Not only is the BR community more than educated, but they are more than willing to re-sit the film, and be more than appreciative at the slightest recut or alternate angled shot, that the director wants to give them. I`ve seen the quality of the directors cuts that Sir Ridley has graced us with, and on the strength of those, await with baited breath, and huge anticipation, that the recut will do the film proud.

* Warner brothers cut an extensive scene from the beginning of Bruce Lee`s Enter the Dragon, believing the opening sequence was too philosophical for the audience, though the scene was widely available in honk kong under the virgin label, Warner Bros re-inserted the scene for the 25th anniversary edition. If you have seen the clip in question, you get to believe that film companies do not always make the right decision!

ok, here is my offical wish list for BR. I wont say for the BR-FC, because some of the `requests` were never shot.

1. credits removed, movie starts like the WP.
2. Batty scen in the furnice, shoveling bodies, then film starts.
3. wp differences like audio and leon/sushi scenes added.
4. hospital scene added
5. phone booth filming corrected to original scetch and not reversed filming from a later batty/tyrell scene.
6. extra tyrell and spinner shots
7. hockey scene added - to give more detective work on deckards part.
8. elaborate snake pit scene.
9. more talking with racheal, they dont have much basis for a relationship
10. international violence scenes re-inserted, more to the point not cut short.
11. also extra senes in leon apartment.
12. more racheal shots while deckard washes, including alternate love song.
13. extended gun reloading, deckard escaping
14 batty finds tyrell already dead and in cryo, realises his life has now had it.
15 alrernate batty dying scene with alternate camera angles of his death.
16 deckard and racheal escape in his sedan
17 (really pushing the boat now) deckard takes racheal to the forrest/sun and meadows where he realises the errors of his ways and shoots her himself.

plenty more wishlist items, but lets not be greedy.

oh, 5.1 wouldnt go a miss either ;)
