I just want to point out that the main idea behind the VK is not that replicants don't show emotions , but that when they do, it physically represented differently than humans. Racheal was able to fool the VK for so long because she didn't show any emotion and was completely "cool" to all of deckards questions.

Err, my understanding is that the Replicants learnt how to 'fake' an emotional response but the concious effort took slightly longer than a sub-concious 'natural' response that normal humans exhibited. The VK machine measured the difference between the expected reaction time and the subject's reaction times. A slightly longer delay could indicate a 'fake' response - or (in the book) that you're a 'special' (in which case a bone marrow sample was analysed to confirm your human status).

if that were true it would be easy to just show an emotionless response as racheal was doing, and as to a point Leon did. I think it was the real emotions that gave them away. It has been a while since I read DADoES, but seem to remember an explaination similar to what I said. Or at least an inability to give real emotions to things they had no context for, while a human would have sympathy.

Let us decipher this topic in a rational manner. PKD had many visions; most were based upon what is genuine (real) and what were illusions (implants). What would your reaction be if you were adopted? Either it was kept as a secret or when of age, you were told. Would you be upset with your ?adopted? parents or your ?biological? creators? I must have done something wrong. I was unwanted. He created a niece and it became aware. The potential for Rachael becoming unstable (emotion) was inevitable. Finally she was an outcast. We have genetically mutated canines for our pleasure. The repercussions are health problems. These ?gaps? we speak of whether theatrical or publication, intended or not, invokes our awareness.
