Do you prefer Deckard as a human or as a replicant?

The unicorn footage looks as though it's LEGEND? footage because it is.
Hence the disruption of the natural flow of the picture.

The idea of DECKARD as a Replicant? does not sit well with me for several reasons, not least of which is the fact that he showed no physical prowess whenever he encountered them.
He was everyone's b*tch!
A woman stuck her fingers up his nostrils, for crying out loud!

The empathy DECKARD feels is what makes him & any other hunter good @ what they do.
This is why THE BATMAN? is needed to catch THE JOKER?, for he truly understands him.

The "6th Replicant?" is a script continuity error that was never addressed during filming, & which has since become a piece of Fanboy? mythology.

It's quite alright that you disagree with my assessment, since most people whom I encounter do so.

What I think is more important than homogeneity of opinion is clarity of intent & purpose.

Heres my take. This is film noir right? Well, the hero isn't supposed to get the girl in film noir, and in order for it to stay true to the genre, Deckard needs to out live racheal and watch her die. And I agree that if Deckard isn't human then the film looses many of its strong themes. I vote for Deckard being human.

Quite a good point you have there hansen,I agree with you up to a point, but the fact is that Deckard doesn't 'Have' to be replicant just because Blade Runner is future noir style. Blade Runner is just Blade Runner....
But Im certain of one thing... Blade Runner is original!

Film Noir oficially died in the 50s.

Future Noir is just a name for THE BOOK.

TECH NOIR is what BR is.

I guess the director didn't know that then now did he?

TECH NOIR was the name of that club in The Terminator.

Future Noir is the title of the famous Blade Runner bible. Taking Future Noir as a genre isn't very appropriate because Blade Runner would be the only movie fitting into that genre. I can't think of any other movies where sci-fi is mixed with a film noir detective story except maybe some b-movies like Trancers.

Back to topic:
I voted that I prefer Deckard as a rep because I like the noir aspect of the story, that Deckard could be a victim of a huge conspiracy.
I love the subtlety the movie uses to point out it's major themes, that you can never be sure of who you are, that you cannot fully trust your own memories. It's so much better than to go straight rubbing the cold facts into the audience's faces that Deckard is a human or a replicant. If there were true facts this discussion would have never happened.

Of course, in my opinion the actor knows best. Harrison Ford played
Deckard as a human. We don't see the child like insecurities of the reps.
in Deckard's character. And who says you can't plant memories into a
human, and even if his memories were changed, he still had the 'knack'
of blade running, or perhaps the talent of blade running, which can only
come about will a great amount of experience in the profession. He has
a kind of 6th sense about it in the book and a little of that shows in the
movie, Reps being machines don't have that kind of ability. Also, Deckard
showed a variety of human emotions that reps apparently don't have, like
being bitter, or tired.

Easy answer, whether I like it or not (and I do), is that Deckards a replicant because Ridley Scott says he is and he made the movie, not Mr Ford. As if there was ever any doubt after the BRDC, Ridley Scott is on film as stating this; see 'On the Edge of Blade Runner' which has been aired in the UK several times and which was made (I believe) by Channel Four. Of course, this only refers to the movie but I'm supposing that's what you are discussing. As Syd Mead says in the same prog, 'Who needs another macho detective doing the same old thing' or words to that effect.
If you have seen this prog I know other people are quoted as saying otherwise but they are the actors, not the director. At the end of the day BR would never have existed without Scott in the form it is in.
