What did 1982 audiences think about the origami unicorn in the last scene?
I would imagine that, without the unicorn dream, it would have been very confusing and random.

Were people scratching their heads about it until the Director's Cut came out in 1992?

I just saw it as a sign that Gaff was there, and didn't kill Rachael. He was "letting them go". Never was confusing at all.
