finally bought the book, and read half of it today.
I cant believe how closely the movie follows the book. its a really good insight into Rick, Rachel etc.

btw, the year in the book is 1992. were there any celebrations in LA for BR then ?

Have you guys read the book, what do you think ?

Are you sure? I could've sworn it was 2020

The book is definitely set in 1992 - the movie was originally going to be set in 2020 (I have a VHS that actually says 'set in 2020') but Ridley changed it to 2019 'cos 2020 sounds like '20-20' as in '20-20 vision'. Seeing (no pun intended) as though 'eyes' are big motif in the movie, I think 2020 would have been okay... 8)

DADOES is no where near as good as BR. I think PKD has brilliant ideas, especially in DADOES, Minority Report, and Total Recall. I just can't stand his writing style. His character's just aren't very believeable to me.

DADOES does have some excellent ideas in it though. Mercerism vs Buster firiendly represents the struggle of religion vs materialism.

I just feel BR does things about 1000 times better than the book does.

Well, you could argue that movies will never be as good as the reader's imagination. I mean, if you'd never seen BR but had read DADOES would you have Harrison Ford in mind for the role of Deckard?

It's pobably impossible to answer that question having seen the movie then read the book - which is what I did. I find it impossible to read DADOES without recalling the imagery (and music) from the film.

I don't get that at all. I see the wolrd of DADOES as much more 'clean' and high tech. I know I shouldn't, seeing as there isn't much to support this in the book.

I have the same dilemma. I saw the film before reading the book so everytime I read the book, I see a Spinner where hovercar is written, and so on,.......although for some reason the words in the book assemble to create a cleaner future (at least for me).

However, had there not been a film, I'll bet my next paycheck that I would never have read or heard of a book by this title in all my 22.5 years on this mortal plane.

I've never seen an electronic 'text' version of DADoES, but I've got an audio book version. A side note: guess who voices Rachel in the audio production? ... Harrison Ford's current flame ... Calista Flockhart.

The reading comes across pretty well (I think). Keep in mind that this is a verbatum reading of the book and it hasn't been adapted for a theactrical presentation. These turn up on eBay occasionally and can usually be had for a pretty reasonable amount. (I paid $4 for mine).

Well I finished reading DADoES...

must admit, it got very strange toward the end. particulary with the Rachel/Pris connection.

.. I agree Kobold2001. I much prefer to watch the movie, but now I have the background to the movie in my head.

I always wondered why there was such a strong 'animal' theme in BR.
The book certainly explained that.
