Also, believe it or not, Vanilla Sky is also based on one of Dick's short stories.

Well, actually, the story is this. Vanilla Sky is a remake of "Open Your Eyes" (Abre Los Ojos), which is a superior film in every way.

Now "Open Your Eyes", is based on one of Dick's short stories. Forgot the name, I think it is called "I hope we shall arrive soon". I saw some very close simmilarities when I saw both "Open Your Eyes" and "Vanilla Sky" to the short story.

And then bam, I heard Alejandro Amenbar, the writer and director of "Open Your Eyes" give an interview in which he said the film was indeed based on Dick's short story that I just mentioned. Although he calls it more of an inspiration, since he took out of the futuristic space ship setting and revamped it as his own. But he kept the whole thing with the dreams, the cryogenic sleep and replaced the ship computer (who ats as the character's guide) in the short story with the customer service character that explains what is happening as seen in both films. Of course, other changes were made, as well as other things from the story were kept.

Anyway, just thought I would share this. I personally loved "Open Your Eyes" and "Vanilla Sky".

Anyway, new to the forums heh First post. Hey all!
Thank you! Glad I stumbled on these forums. Huge BR fanatic.
I'm looking forward to the 3 disc SE, whenever it comes out. I lurk at the Home Theater Forums from time to time, and the DVD producer for Scott Free productions is a member there and worked on all Scott's special edition dvd's thus far, including Alien, and he provided some great information on the 3 disc set for BR that left me drooling!
Watching the ending of Minority Report made me wonder if Spielberg lost his balls.

It was so cheesy, you know the one similar the the original BR ending "this person is here that person is there" i hate those un-imaginative endings! Spielberg, you will PAY!

Well theres my weekly bitch overwith but wait theres more!

Wheres that damn BR DVD?

Thanks for the welcome, Gene!

Robo, I agree! I loved, I mean loved Minority Report until the ending.

Ugh.

Spielberg has NO balls. I loved A.I, so I assumed he was back on track.

But he screwed up big time.

The film should have ended when Cruise is locked away. It would have been powerful.

Ok, in the original short story, he does succeed, but since the film took many other departures from the short story, he should have ended the film there.

Not that what happens afterwards is bad, but it would have been more powerful.

Now, Spielberg could have continued on and went ahead with the ending in film and it still would have worked BUT he had to over stay his welcome and add that stupid it's a happy happy world resolution where Tom Cruise is narrating to us and we get those images of the house and the gree fields. Ugh!

So, while I think the film should have ended with a bleak ending, I still think the good ending works fine... but that extra fluff at the end ruined it.

It should have ended right on the balcony, after that whole little confrontation. Bam. End it there. No after thoughts. Bam. A quick, abrupt ending, like in BR. And it would have been good. Not as good as the bleak ending, but good never the less.

I do plan on getting the DVD, but rest assure, I will be hitting the stop button before the film ends

Hmm, speaking of the devil, I was just watching my Criterion Edition dvd of Robocop last night. Great film.
I'll probably get the MR DVD,too (or at least watch it again), `cause it was a kewl experience when I saw it in an IMAX theatre - but IMHO "IMPOSTER" was more entertaining (great ending) and I never saw it in the theatre.

I'm not a big fan of Spielberg's endings in any movie he makes. In fact, i totally despise his drawn-out style in most respects. Telltale sign is the ever-increasing length of his movies. In my very humble opinion, two hours is quite enough for any movie, and only a few exceptions should be made to that rule (The Longest Day being one that jumps immediately to mind).
In any case, the tedious endings of Saving Private Ryan, A.I., Close Encounters, and Minority Report don't justify the extra minutes. They don't add anything to the story, and nothing unexpected ever happens.

I'll forgive him CE3K because that was an early one but as for the rest I am in total agreement with you.
