The picture is just a CGI artwork, not a screenshot. DX2 will be (like its precursor) using Unreal engine and this does look much more like 3D MAX work...

Otherwise I am watching its development with pleasure, as the first game was really awesome. IMHO, it's one of the best games which were able to efectively fuse RPG elements, first preson shooting/sneaking and adventure/like NPC interaction.

I am really curious about how the devs will connect the plot to the first part, since you able to finish DX1 in three ways.

interesting DX related sites:

http://www.planetdeusex.com
http://www.deus-ex.org
http://www.ionstorm.com
my favourite Deus Ex/Thief/System Shock 2 forums: http://www.ttlg.com

_________________
"We need ya, Deck!" Blade Runner Insight Forum | Blade Runner SK Community

[ This Message was edited by: BR796164 on 2002-08-22 05:59 ]

My mistake. I tought I found it under "Screenshots" in www.deiusex.com, but yes, it was in "Artwork". Looks very cool. How do you rate Deus Ex? I'd like to play it, but don't have the time (nor the money).

revel In Your Time
Centauro, you will definitely not regret the money for DX, it's very good game. It has some minor negatives though, but the plot is very immersive and the game is pretty long (it took me more than 50 hours to finish it for the rirst time). If you like long games of course. I do.

Besides, many gaming mags worldwide have entitled it as "Game of the year 2000".

Hard to say much without being forced to spoil you. Try to ask something specific.

_________________
"We need ya, Deck!" Blade Runner Insight Forum | Blade Runner SK Community

[ This Message was edited by: BR796164 on 2002-08-23 07:46 ]

[ This Message was edited by: BR796164 on 2002-08-23 07:48 ]

Man, you aren't going to believe this! First: Deus Ex is in english and haven't been traslated to spanish AFAIK. A teenage nephew of mine has a friend whose parents (I pressume) bought him the game (those games aren't cheap here). But he doesn't speak /read english, so that guy just gave the game away to my nephew, 'cause he (obviously found it boring as he didn't understand a word).

But my nephew doesn't do that good with english neither. So guess who's holding the game at this moment? (And playing of course?)

HAHAAHA! The damn game just came to me!!!

_________________
Revel In Your Time

[ This Message was edited by: Centauro on 2002-08-29 02:55 ]
SEP?12?2002. Just Finished.

Well, my impressions. This is goinng to be long. I know much of the things I'm gonna say are very old news to some of you, but remember where I live, and that I don't get to play recent PC games very often. For me, D?X was kinda new. If it is to someone else, this post cointains spoilers. And this is a game you don't want to be spoiled.

Overall, I liked D?X very much. Bad thing I had to play it in such a rush, but I had to. Altough I own the game now, I won't have the time to play it again, which is not really something I'd like to do since the game is very long and complex. The things I dind't do, or say, the places I didn't go to, I guess I'll never do. And that's fine, because that game is like real life. Let me explain.

This kind of game, I think, is the natural evolution of the 3D FPS as we first knew them from the ID guys, at least in single player oriented gaming. I liked very much that you can interact freely with almost anything in the game world, including people and objects totally irrelevant to the game plot.(I gave it a try at basketball in NY, and was amused with the pool tables). Unlike most FPS, D?X is not an "if-it-moves, shoot it", and (most of) the enemies are not evil zombies or mindless aliens. And that relates with the fact that one of the best features in the game, is the moral choices you have. Since you are fighting against PEOPLE, from the very start you must take some moral choices: be a merciless killer, or develop a minimum casualties strategy. I choose the last one. OK, if I wasn't able to kill anybody in the game, I would not have completed it, but I tried to reduce the killing to situations when it was their life or "mine". And since there were millions of lifes at stake, I managed to handle it. With the mechs and various classes of cyborgs (like the MIBs), I had no problem since I didn't think of them as humans.

I guess you might be thinking, this guy takes it too seriously!. Well, you know, I'm actually working in my... how do you call it? ...the "Tesis", you know, that investigation paper you have to make when you finish your college in order to 'prove' you are a professional, and get the Diploma. (Now I think I don't know if it works that way in the US, UK and other countries). Well, the fact is that I'm working on Moral Develoment Psychology, and studying it makes you pay more atention to moral issues wherever you find them. And killing people (even in a game) is the most important moral issue, so I tried to act in the game in a way that matches what I'd do in the real world. If in the game you are responsible for the lives of thousands of people you don't see, the lives of the people you interact with also is, even if they are the bad guys. So, as you alreday guessed, I played stealth most of the time. But let's move on to something else.

I don't want to touch delicate fibers in any of you, but next I'm going to coment a couple of things that are part of the game, and part of our reality: Not coincidentially (coincidences don't exist) just yesterday was the aniversary of 9-11. Obviously, I'm talking about terrorism, and the antiterrorist fight. This game was released in 2000, and it depicts a future in which a terrorist attack to the NY Liberty Statue is the trigger to the conformation of a agency called United Nations Antiterrorist Coalition. Now if you compare that to an attack to the NY?WTC that triggered the actual situation of the "US commanding the Western World vs. Terrorists Whoever they be, wherever they are", you can't say it is not in general lines the same picture. Let me stop here to share my respect and sincere sentiment with all the families and friends of the people that died in 9-11. Along with the americans, asians, jews and people from other coutries, some Colombianos died in the WTC.

I do not favour acts of violence against civilians. In fact I do not favour any violence, but one have to accept that if a person enlists in an army, that person knows what could be happening to his/her life. 9-11 was an atrocity, but so it was the killing of many afghan countrymen that did not belong to Taliban. Yes, it happened. And that's terrorism too. I don't know if you know, or if you care, but Colombia, my country, has been bleeding since I have memories (and far before) in a war of guerrillas that almost every day leaves entire families dead, widows and orphans, and lots, and I mean LOTS, of displaced people that run from the countryside to the cities to 'save' their lives. And I say 'save', because they come to the cities only to sum themselves to the urban misery belts. In my city, we've suffered terrorism too. Last Aug?07 (Presidential posession) the city was saved of a massive mortar bombing by a failure in the electrical detonation systems of the mortars. And despite of it all, this city and this country is a nice place to live. You must be thinking 'no way!', but I assure you, it is. How could I prove it? ... Well, come. I have and extra room in my house open to anyone who wants to come and see it with his/her own eyes. (The US State Departmente will advise you not to 'dare' to come). Despite we are not threatened by BenLaden (but worse, by some of our own compatriots), I have a pretty closer horrible picture of terrorism, than any US citizen could have. And of course I dream about this land free of terrorism and war, but I know that the causes of that war must dissapear first, or simultaneously. And I think that the US and Europe could help in many ways different to sending us troops or money for weapons, because I haven't lost the faith in this people. Unfortunately, there are many interests in play aroung the drug production... But enough of that (if anyone would like to discuss those political issues with me, emails are welcome), for my point is that the antiterrorist fight is a two bladed sword when someone acquires the 'right' to call anyone a terrorist and it becomes truth, and gives them the right to do anything to them, like the UNATCO guys in Deus Ex. Well, let's get bak to the game.

STORY: IMO, the intro cinematics give away too much information in the start. The plot is long and involving, but it would have been better if it involved more deatils related to the cospiranoid theories, and if there was more betrayal. I mean, it is clear that everybody wanted to use JC (except his brother maybe), but once they ally with you, nobody gives surprises. Or someone does and I missed it? Now that I think of it, I never reunited with Reyes in Paris... The final cinematics were poor, but it is clear that they were meant to insinuate the further events, not to show them. Guess it has to do with DX?2...? We always are eager for more, but after playing, I don't think it was a good idea to make a sequel, I mean how'd they gonna hanlde the three endings? DX2 has 3 beginnings?

GAMEPLAY: Once you get used to grab things (something a little different when one's used to Quake) it becomes natural. Is good to have more that one way to get to the places you have to go, and the weapons are variated and realistic. Good to see how heavy is the GEP gun. The augs are helpful but you don't become almighty, which is good. There were times when I just ran away in time to the exhaustion of my invisibility, and I find that kind of thing very exicting.

GRAPHICS: About the graphics, they did a very good work in textures, modeling and lighting. Looks very good, and I don't have an advanced 3Dcard. Good dark atmosphere. Like BR, all the action takes place at night. Wouldn't it be AWESOME if they could make it rain?? I guess it is not an easy thing to do, but it would rock. I liked it very much how the eyes of some characters blink in the cinematics.

SOUND: In some places the music is a perfect element to create atomsphere along the visuals, while in others not so. There are some good sticky songs. One thing that is nice but at the same time bad, is that change in the music when an enemy is in alert. When the music is gone, you know you can wander around again, so it becomes a matter of waiting for the "action" music to fade. Good voice acting, but in some cases they gave too many characters to the same person, and they can't totally chance accent or tone. JC's voice is a little "over-heroed". Favorite quote: (Scared trooper) Sgt.? ...is that you??

CHALLENGE: When one has gone thru the first 2 levels, it is ready to make it to the end, I mean, one learns to use the energy and the weapons wisely. And so, even the last stages were not that hard.

I'm not an expert, but I give this game 8 out of 10.

Obviously, my chosen ending was the New Dark Age. I don't like to be used.

If some day they make another Blade Runner game, they should look at DX game style.
