We are all praying for a Blade Runner sequel to appear someday in the future. The problem is that the movie's popularity is steadily decreasing; as many people of the future generation have no idea about the name of the nearly 20 years old film.
The closest thing to the sequel is Jeter's books. Many Fans rejected the possible predictions set by Jeter.
But remember that the book "Do Androids dream of electric sheep" inspired Ridley Scott and David Peoples to create and form the Blade Runner Movie.
Will one director create the sequel based on Jeter's books? That...I don't know.
I hope there is never a sequel..case in point: The Star Wars prequels sort of ruin the originals by virtue of the fact the storyline skews off tangent. Alien sequels by and large disimprove into nothingness. Also sequels tend to be rush jobs or semi-skits of the original and unlike Toy Story 2 which could play with the characters and expand the CGI world I can't see Blade Runner ever being improved upon. I can see a Blade Runner sequel with different characters and tone being a CGI mess..it would hardly go the Godfather 2 route. I'd rather watch and rewatch the original in whatever format, and welcome new ideas of sci-fi worlds to the cinema screen.

Though I agree there is no need for a direct sequel to the plotline of BR, I wouldn't mind another story set in the same setting if it was crafted as well as Ridley could, with all the "noirish" aspects and layered details, and most importantly was able to keep the overall texture. I know alot of movies and shows have tried to do so and all have pretty much failed except for maybe "Akira" and "Metropolis" the anime' movies. The TV show "Total Recall 2040" also came close but not nearly close enough. And then there was "Soldier"...ugggh another hollywoodized mess. Roaland Emerich's "Moon 44" wasn't too bad. A lot of low budget movies tended to get closer because they avoided the "Hollywood Polishing". I wouldn't mind also if they continued the story idea of Tyrell being a replicant surrogate for the real Tyrell in stasis as an attempt at immortality. Even though I know the idea was stolen for the Star Wars Dark Empire comic book mini-series. it would tie up alot of loose ends I feel the movie had...plus it might allow for a chance to go "off world". The one thing I did like about the Jeter books(and DADOES) was the ability to bring characters you liked back as either duplicates(replicant clones) or the origional human that was the template for the replicants. In fact every actor from the origional movie could come back as a new character. The magic of BR though has alot to do with so many elements coming together. Ridley directing, once in a lifetime performances from all the actors, Syd Mead, Mobius, Vangelis(most important) and the fact it was the first of a lot of "replicants"(copycat movies) that would make it just a copy itself(ala Star Wars). If it could be done outside hollywood(at least for funding) and with most of the origional artists, I say what the hell, I'd pay to see it.

I hope there is never a sequel, BR is a great film and it can not be topped by another.

I liked the "Total Recall 2070" television series a lot. It is probably as close to a Blade Runner series as we are likely to see. The creators of the show were very candid during interviews that the show had a great deal more to do with the spirit of Blade Runner than with Total Recall. Too bad it only lasted for one season. I recorded 11 of the 22 episodes before it was cancelled. I keep waiting for one of the cable channels to pick it up for syndication, so I can tape the remaining shows, but so far no luck.

I think if you want some new story related to BR it would have to be either way before or way after.

Fact is, I really think its asking for trouble to have a sequel.

If it is a mess (75% chance of crap)it will leave a very sour taste in our collective mouths. It will tarnish the dream.

So you are comparing the Blade Runner movie as a museum piece, well thats a strange thing to say.
However, we live in a generation of hundreds of sequels comin up, because Hollywood had gone sequelitis. It's hard to say but what happens if one director decides to expand the movie BR a bit? You beat the crap out of him?

Sequels to classic movies especially today end up in the drink, did you see Robocop 2, have you heard about Conan 3 and Indiana Jones 4 i don't think a sequel would be any good.

OK film, not a patch on the original though.
Aliens: Good enjoyable film, though lacks Scotts class.
Terminator 2: Good film, just doesn't hit the spot like the original.
Indiana Jones 3: IMHO this is absolute rubbish. Poor mans Raiders of the Lost Ark with very few redeeming features.

Toy Story 2 is a fantastic sequel, definitely better than the original. French Connection 2 is a great sequel, probably not quite as good as the original but arguably a better performance by Hackman.
