More faithful adaptation

I know Warner Bros is not allowed to re-make Blade Runner. But would they be allowed to start from scratch and re-adapt "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"? Could those be seen as two different approaches, legally?

How would you feel if WB decided to make a film that stuck closely to the plot of the novel?

Re: More faithful adaptation

The book is all but unfilmable. There are no likable characters. It would be very long and very confusing. It would suffer from being constantly compared to Blade Runner. I think the book is absolutely brilliant, but only if you can read it at your own pace, and go back and reread stuff in it. Not something that would work on the big screen at all, maybe a mini series perhaps, done in an almost contemporary setting even. It would pretty much have to fail. The very idea of it is almost as insulting as a remake, if not more so. So what is the point?
