Many of us have wondered how a modern remake of Blade Runner would look. Well, I think I can honestly say that I have discovered the next best thing; a Korean sci-fi film called NATURAL CITY.

This is an awesome movie with phenomenal visual effects that take you right back into the BR universe. And the plot, as well as some of the character, virtually parallels that of Blade Runner:

?In the year 2080, human clones with artificial intelligence replace manual labor in Natural City. Each clone has its own expiry, but few are willing to accept the fate of recycling. A "MP" force is therefore formed to dig out those expired clones.?

For now, the movie is only available on a region 3 encoded dvd, so you will need multi-region dvd to watch it. If you don?t have a multi- regional dvd player, I would definitely keep an eye out for this movie because I?m sure it might be available in other formats in the near future.

uh, actually, now region codes dont matter. if anyone wants, i can dig up that piece of software i found that elimiantes the need for region codes. its a demo only, so it works for 30 days, enough to rip the DVD to your HD to watch it. anyone interested? i think its compatible with all dvd playing software. PC only. for linux users, well, any region code will play with Ogle. another reason to use linux trust me, i had a robocop dvd from china, it played fine.

this might be illegal, depending on how you do it. i use a program called "dvd decrypter" spelled like that (www.dvddecrypter.com). what it does is it rips the dvd from the dvd-rom drive onto a folder onto the hard drive, so you can play all your DVD's flawlessly from your hard drive. this is good for backups. i use it because i only use a laptop, and when i travel, i dont want the batteries getting eaten up by the dvd-rom being in use (this takes away a big amount of battery life). also, when i go places, i dont like to lug around all my dvds (especially the alien quadrilogy, sheesh, 9 discs). so i just ripped htem to my laptop hard drive and watch them from there. most DVD playing software will let you play DVD files from the hrad drive. im telling you this because if you are worried about DVD Genies messing something up, which i doubt it would, dvddecrypter might let you rip the DVD, and get rid of the region code, because when you decrypt it, it erases the copy protection as well. NOTE: I do not use this illegally, and i dont commend pirating software/movies/music, etc..., please do not use this in bad ways.

now, back on topic, as for the movie, it does look like BR. im gonna get a copy when an english translation comes out. if that's not gong to happen, then ill just get this copy.

To me this doesn't look like BR at all. Br is immensely rich in detail. It takes at least 10 viewings for the detail alone. What I see here is quite the opposite. It's clean and austere. Like the "Matrix" but cleaner. Absolutely not Blade Runner.

EDIT: On the other hand, everything is influenced by Blade Runner. So this movie too, of course.

i was refering to the screenshot of that woman looking up with the unbrella. but yes, other than that, it looks like a blade runner/matrix.

Leon Corp., I too was referring to the picture with the rain and the umbrella. There are many scenes like that. But the movie does have some ?Matrix? in it as well, and even a slight feel of the anime ?Ghost in the Shell?.

Unfortunately, the Koreans have failed miserably in the sci-fi movie genre. Though I haven't yet seen Natural City (I've had it ordered, but it's been back ordered for about a month now), 2009 Lost Memories was awful. Then again, I loved Wonderful Days and thought that Save the Green Planet was brilliant (but it was way more psychological thriller than sci-fi).

Anyway... from everything I've heard about Natural City, it's another unfortunate Korean sci-fi flop.

Before that too. Remember SF in the Fifties? I think one of the first SF movies to break that pattern is Dark Star (1974), which I believe is a movie they should fully restore so it can have a proper DVD release. It's an important film, Dan O'Bannon/Alien-wise. It's funny too. Almost "Spinal Tab" kinda funny.

Yes, this is okey to blade Runner, but the other things you see in the trailers like cities on clouds make this more a fantasy movie.
It's tho bright comparisoned to blade runner and there is to much dynamic.

At least we can see how UN-INVENTIVE contemprary cinema is...
Copying the classics all the time instead of creating new ones...

yeah. seems like everyone know is copying every other person's creations.

Also, in BR almost everything is designed and created for the movie. In Natural City, and I'm only judging on the photos here, they've looked for existing sets. Or simply placed a bench on the beach. Sets in BR are real pieces of art. True classics for everyone in the profession. Something you're not likely to ever see again. Blade Runner's set designer should've gotten the Academy Award, at least! Ridley too, of course. However, if BR had been a success we probably would've ended up with something like Blade Runner: Resurrection. Oh my God...
