There?s an interesting posting by Bently Yousley in the Yahoo Blade Runner soundtrack group, a journalist Richard Clews has emailed him who posits the theory of why Vangelis suppressed the soundtrack for so long?<BR><!-- BBCode Start --><I>?Through my freelance work for pro audio titles, I've come to know <BR>many of the people who worked for Vangelis over the years, including <BR>Raphael Preston (engineer) and Alwyn Clayden (sleeve designer - and <BR>yes, there were plans for an '82 sleeve design before you ask<BR>What his collaborators have said is that, following his Oscar for <BR>Chariots, Vangelis was very apprehensive about what to release next. <BR>You might think he would be on a high, but this wasn't the case. <BR>Vangelis did not want to be seen as a John Barry-type: someone who <BR>concentrated on filmscore to the exclusion of everything else. <BR><BR>There was no bust-up with Ridley: indeed, as you have said, the music <BR>was ready to go. Money was not the problem. Copyright may have <BR>played a part, as Vangelis was signed to Polydor and it was a Warners <BR>film, but even the end titles mention Polydor. It seems most likely <BR>that Vangelis had a last minute change of heart. And it wasn't just <BR>Blade Runner that didn't get released - Vangelis didn't release <BR>another solo album worldwide until Soil Festivities in 1984! The <BR>only solo album he released between Chariots and Soil Festivities was <BR>the Antartica score, and that was in Japan only. <BR><BR>Now, as to why it was released in '94... 1492 probably had a lot to <BR>do with it, but the catalyst was the Directors Cut and possibly the <BR>bootleg (although Vangelis supposedly was not aware of it). Another <BR>factor is that in '91 he spent a fortune building a studio in Paris, <BR>where 1492 was recorded, only for the French government to later tell <BR>him that it breached planning regulations. End of studio! So money <BR>might have been a factor, and there's nothing wrong with that. <BR><BR>There have been attempts to get a complete version released for the <BR>20th anniversary, to tie in with the new DVD. I don't think this <BR>will happen, but there might be an isolated audio track on the new <BR>DVD.
