I thought that they were some kind of Computer or TV possibly.
There is something very similar to these monitors in the film Brazil.

Fresnel lenses used in front of monitors to enlarge and distort the images. They can be bought at shope for the blind and visually impared for computer monitors to enlarge images. Also the 'concave' version of the lense to reduce the image can be bought at auto parts shops for van windows to give a wide angle view of what is behind you.
