Would you attempt to relocate off-world if given a chance or would you choose to remain behind in L.A.?

If you've seen any of my recent replies to other threads you might have guessed I'm currently re-reading DADOES - in the book it basically says that if you choose to stay on Earth you will eventually succumb to the radioactive dust which, amongst other things, leads to a breakdown of your mental faculties.

The police forces randomly stop and test people - if they fail the basic mental tests they are classed as 'special' and are denied basic human rights and priveliges such as marriage and the right to reproduce. In affect they are considered less than human (sub-human, I suppose). At this point they are not allowed to leave Earth even if they wanted.

So, my answer is, I'd leave Earth rather than being condemned to fate worse than death.

Incidentally, this random testing that everyone has become accustomed to, is used to disguise the real purpose of VK testing - this is because no-one on Earth is supposed to know that Replicants are living amongst them.

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2002-03-13 07:14 ]

I will admit that life here under such conditions wouldn't be conducive to enjoyable living; however, I'd have to wonder why, if off-world living was so great, would the authorities advertise it so much? The Devil you know is better sometimes than the Devil you don't. I think I'd take my chances here.

If the human race stayed on Earth it would become extinct due to the dust and even though everyone knows this, some still choose to remain on Earth. I suppose it's in human nature - we sometimes do stuff knowing that it will have a detrimental effect on our lives.

You raise an interesting point about the advertising - perhaps Tyrell Corp and other such organistations have the rights to the land that is currently occupied - perhaps they're playing a 'long' game knowing that somewhere down the line Earth will be habitable again and ripe for redevelopment and when it is they'll be the sole 'owner'. If you can't physically force people to evacuate then perhaps putting the emphasis on the 'carrot' rather than the 'stick' will encourage the population to leave of their own free will...
