You know that low humming sound that you hear at the veryy end of the film in Deckard appartment, the sound thats also in Alien, guess what. Its in the Empire Strikes Back, too. You can hear it when Luke is in the inside of the gantry on Bespin, where Vader breacks the window and Luke gets blown out,. its there, liten to the whole scene, where there is no music and no sound effects (bar the quiet hum of a lightsaber).

_________________

"Louie. I always assumed that humming noise in Deckard's apartment came from some of the electronic gadgetry in the apartment; perhaps from those video monitors or something else.

That sound appears in Alien (1979)too. I think that Ridley liked it and decided to use it again in BR.
It's strange and quite spooky hum. My refrigerator make noise similar to that one.

Im thinking that that humming is some sort of air purifier machine. The machine may be in all of the apartments constantly cleaning the polluted outside air. I mean, LA 2019 isn't the cleanest of environments.

Hey TomTrek is right.Empire Strikes Back Has that same ambient drone. I thought this was just me stoned at 4am, expieriencing somekind of sci fi movie flashback.
Hallelujah.
Now all i need is one of the Brits on here to tell me they witnessed the "telepathic" version of one Rutger Hauers excellent Guinness TV ads in the early 90's!It happened i swear.

Oh by the way hello eveybody. My name is Precinct and im new to the internet and this excellent site, but i am a bit of an OLD BR bore.Hope im in good company.
Virtually every point i was bursting to make has been made elsewhere but this seems a good place to hang out.

_________________

[ This Message was edited by: Precinct on 2002-04-23 00:28 ]

Welcome, Precinct!

I assure you, you are in a very good company. If you were looking for BR forums, you are in the right place, because you won't find any better on the whole Net.
The more dedicated members these boards will have, the better...

Okie, back to the topic: I have seen ESB week ago again an did notice this hum too.
Strange, never payed attention to this before. Since the Special Edition was released, it is hard to see the original version, unless you have old videotapes or laserdiscs.
But I believe the hum was in the original release of ESB too, it is not SE only feature, right?

I suppose that sound editors of BR and SW were using the same sound effects archive.

Back in the mid-'eighties when I was in Polythechnic on an Art & Design course, a machine in the basement where we did printing and typo work made the EXACT same noise. Totally bewitched me. It was some kind of air condiyioning/aur purifier, with huge vents and tubes going off to lord knows where.
I can only suppose a similar set-up existed where the sound boys recorded fx for BR.
