"Questions..." "I don't have answers"

So, I just finished watching the Final Cut, and the Internation Cut in Blu-Ray. Wow. Dazzling. Better than ever before.

And now I have some questions. Things I have thought about in the past, but never found an answer to them.

1) How does Roy know Deckard's name in the end? "Come on Deckard....show me what your made of."

2) Are we just supposed to assume that Tyrell told Deck about Rachael's memories of playing doctor and the spider?

3) Is there a reason why they used different takes of the Leon/Holden scene when Deckard plays them back several times? For example: Originally, Leon says, "My mother, let me tell you about my mother", and then while Deck is driving through the tunnel, he is playing it back and Leon says, "My mother, I'll tell you about my mother". The pacing is also quite different between the original scene and the subsequent play-backs by Deckard. In my opinion, this is one of the only "mistakes" that actually kind of annoys me...

1) Wow, that is a good question. I never noticed that before. I will have to think on that one.

2) I assumed that in the rest of their conversation about memories that Tyrel gave some examples of her implanted memories to make a point. It seems to me that they were memories that involved significant emotional response on her part, specifically the fear/anxiety that caused her to stop playing "Doctor" and the repulsion at seeing the baby spiders eat their mother. These "remembered" emotions might have helped provide the cushion to which Tyrel referred in his dialog.

3) I don't know, but it mildly annoyed me as well.

Regrading question 1, the only thing I can surmise is that somehow Roy found out information about the Blade Runnering going on through JF or the Tyrell Corp. But, I really don't know. Maybe there is some stuff left out that we don't see, or maybe it could be a technicality that was just plain ignored during filming/editing.

Answers:

1.) Originally Ridley had a scene where Roy taps into the police mainframe, and get's Rick's name. The scene was never shot, but it was left in his knowing Rick's name. Left to the audience's imagination that his being smart must mean he used his Intel skills to find out whom his hunter was.

3.) My feeling on that is for dramatic purposes. When it is repeated in Deckard's mind, whilst in the tunnel, Leon says it with more feeling. It is what we'd (probably) remember after only hearing it said once. The impact such a statement makes before a horrific act is compressed and only elements that we strongly identify with are recalled. So...for Deckard, (and most movie goers before the multiple viewings on tape/DVD), what stands out more is "I'll tell you about my mother"...of course, it's the way he delivered it that makes the point.

So...don't let it annoy you. I don't believe it was a mistake. It's part of the trick... just as we subliminally hear part of the spiders implant in another scene you brought up in question number 2.

Thanks for that clarification! I had always assumed (in each of the hundred times I have watched the movie) that Deckard was "searching for clues" and insight into Leon by listening to an actual recording of the Holden/Leon event (most probably on 8-track which had made a comeback by 2019*) while he was driving. It never occured to me that he was recalling it in his head.

You see, I disagree. To me it clearly seems to be him listening to a recording/video of the scene in his car. I don't feel that he is recalling it at all, but rather playing it over and over in his vehicle. That said, this isn't the only moment I am talking about. When Deck is in Bryants office, Bryant shows Deck a recording of Holden's VK test on Leon, and this is CLEARLY a different take, as far as I can tell. The pacing is all different, etc. Its the one big "mistake" that really throws me off, even moreso than the obvious Zhora stunt double, and the out of synch dialog between Deck and Abdul.

Either way, I'm not complaining, but I was very surprised to see this technicality over-looked or ignored in the Final Cut. It would have been a very quick and easy fix, unlike some of the other errors that were corrected for the FC, and imho, would have made a HUGE difference for fans who watch BR over and over and over.

I think the dialog in the office is the same, but the pacing is definitely NOT the same. I would have go back and listen to it again to be 100% sure about the dialog. IIRC, there may be one or two words out of place.

Man, I love nerding out about this movie.

Well, here's my take: Leon was in the crowd when Zhora was retired. Deckard gave out his name and identified himself as a Blade Runner. Leon, with Nexus 6 hearing, could have picked up on it. He may have contacted Roy with the information before he took one on the dome.

That's some damn good thinking! I like this theory. But I'm wondering how Leon got in touch with Roy before he met Deckard...are there public vidphones out in the streets?

There are around Chew's, so I'd bet there are in the 4th Sector, too!

As for #3, Charles deLauzirika explained it real well: There are mistakes, and there are beloved mistakes. And according to what CdL calls 'The Greedo Rule', if Ridley had wanted all three interviews to be from the same take, he easily could have.

That explains it technically, though in terms of it making sense within the story, uh... your guess is as good as mine!
