Couldn?t Deckard just have V.K?d her on the spot? Why the ethics committee act? Having said, a chase does make a film much more exciting.
I think that if he attempted to VK her there and then, she may have become suspicious as to his motives..
'I hear the management have been taking liberties with the artists in this place. By the way, how about a spot of Voight-Kampff?'

Isn?t it plausible to say that if she were a Replicant she would be suspicious of his motives no matter what? Why not just ask her to sit down and get on with the V.K. (he is a B.R. after all, he should have that kind of jurisdiction) and if she even thinks of running away?BANG!!!!

Yes they are a suspicious and crafty bunch, the Replicants.

Why VK anyways, why not a dna blood sample or a skin sample or a fluid sample or something easier like that?

My impression has always been that because they were built of the same materials as us, there was no easy, physical, immediate way to ID a replicant. An autopsy would do it, but by then it's a little late....

In one vertion of the script, Bryant says that it was only after two hours autopsey did they know that the rep that got fried at Tyrells wasn't human.

In the DADOES, it says that only a bone-marrow sample will produce reliable DNA test results, which is a slow process and you have to have consent of the subject to extract the bone-marrow - it's also a very painful procedure which is probably why it's not carried out routinely...
_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2002-02-27 19:37 ]

Replicants are created from selected Human DNA, Therefore a simple physical test won't do. The implication , both from the film and from DADoES is that the only difference is in empathy. Thing is, it is getting a little close to call, (hence Bryant's silence at Deckard's question and the subsequent more than a 100 questions for Rachael.)

Deckard may not be absolutely sure it is Zhora at first. And it is extremely likely that even if he was mistaken and she happened to be a human, she probably wouldn't be too keen on sitting down to do a test.

My impression is that Deckard is working on instinct when he initially suspects the snake dancer to be Zhora. It seems to me that when he called Rachael, he had given up searching for Reps for the evening.
I suspect that there may be numerous reasons why he didn't VK Zhora.

1. He preferred trusting his own instincts (in addition to the fact that he saw her photo) rather than lugging around a briefcase that must be rather unwieldy and heavy. Also, in this crime riddled society, I doubt he'd be able to take his eyes off of the thing for one minute without someone stealing it. Some miscreants might actually try to take off his hand just to get the thing.

2. Perhaps he would have, if he'd had time. Sometimes, even cops like to be subtle.

It was called the Bonelli Test. If my recall is correct, I think it had to do something with the speed at which humans could press some buttons when reacting to some stimula. In the 'andys' the responses were slightly slower or so. That was in live subjects. When handling a corpse, they did the bone marrow test, as in Polokov.

_________________
-Revel in your Time-

[ This Message was edited by: Centauro on 2002-03-04 22:01 ]
