Retrofitting a Hollywood theatre: The Pantages

Of course, everyone knows about the "retrofitted" skyline of Downtown Los Angeles in Blade Runner. However, the concerns about earthquake safety made the concept non-feasible in real life. Or is it feasible?

The Pantages Theatre was originally designed in the late 1920s to be a 12-story structure, with offices soaring 11 stories above the ground floor theatre complex. However, a little thing called the Great Depression prevented the building from rising to its intended height, and the building was left at two stories tall.

Now the old plans for the building have been dusted off, and the design has been upgraded to meet post-1994 earthquake standards. The Environmental Impact Report process is expected to take two years, then if all goes well the retrofitting process will take another two years before completion.

Life imitates BR...again....

Yes, I really live in Los Angeles. Srsly. And yeah, life really does imitate art here. Especially now we've got those video billboards. No spinners yet. But I suppose that's next.

Cool info, thanks msgeek!

I always look around for interesting factoids about LA since I've been there three years ago. (and if I want to go there mentally/virtually I watch a snippet of Collateral)

Two weeks ago David Lynch spoke in Vienna about the magic of sunlight you have there and got me my DVD of Eraserhead signed by him... (now I finally know what he's talking about)

They have to build it faster though, so we can visit it on our biiig trip through the US of A when we finally arrive in big L and A around one of the next summers... ;)

Hey, maybe we could even meet... ;)

Cool! Thanks for the offer!

Hmm, guess what: I did 2nd Street tunnel, Union Station and the Bradbury on foot embarking from the Westin Bonaventure (short on pre-booking/prep time of all places I could only book this one 'reliably' for my visit to SIGGRAPH 2004 - I didn't know better, now I would. T'was hellishly expensive - for my standards - but oh the view of dowtown L.A. and the night skies, WOW...)

I even accidently met a nice gal from Pixar eating breakfast one block away... ;)

Anyways - we could visit Ennis Brown House during day time and then drive along Mulholland in the dark... ;) ;) ;)

The Warner backlot would be another cool visit...

Hey, we will contact you on our way to the west for sure!

Have a better one!

PS:

Just received email:

'Your DVD of BR:FC has been shipped'

Hurray!!!

(I ordered the two disc set 'cause 1. I can't wait and 2. for visitors who want to have German subtitles projected - the briefcase will arrive around January 3rd ;-)

The Bonaventure is still way cool...it was built in 1976 but it still seems like a Sci-Fi building. The world hasn't quite caught up to it.

The pedestrian bridge connecting the second floor to the street is still a great vantage point for picture taking and people watching...helloooooo down there!

The best view of the city in Downtown LA is atop the Library Tower. The observation deck at City Hall is second-best. The Japanese garden in the sky atop the New Otani is third...actually scratch that, the combination of the serene garden and the view beats out City Hall.

Next time if you come down stay in Little Tokyo, either at the New Otani or at the Miyako. That's my favorite part of the entire City of LA...Little Tokyo. Kawaii. Sugoi.

As I mention on the page, the Ennis House is still down for remodeling. I will post about its reopening when I get word.

What about Zhora's theater? Wouldn't the Taffy Lewis location be more appropriate than the Pantages??

The Wiltern is on my tour. However, it is unrecognizable from its use as the Snake Pit. The Pantages, or actually the Frolic Room in the Pantages Building, was actually used in LA Confidential because it's such a well-preserved late-'40s early-'50s gin joint.
