We might actually have 'em by 2019! Check this page out:

http://www.moller.com/skycar/m400/

I recently heard an interview with Dr. Paul Moller, who's been developing a "skycar" for almost 30 years. It's a vertical-liftoff vehicle that can taxi on the ground and you could park in your driveway. I want one!

People from the old the forum will remember this.

Read Gerry's article 'Smart Technology and the Flying Car'.

The technology has been around for years - Syd Mead said that he based the Spinner propulsion system on the Harrier 'Jump' Jet.

I think the reality is that the Civil Aviation Authority, or whatever aviation control a country has, won't allow us 'little people' to fly these things around - we can't stop ourselves from crashing our road vehicles into each other - what would we be like in the air?

Of course, in the movie, the spinners can fly themselves and be programmed to pickup and collect passengers, so if the thing was totally automatic (and safe) it might have a chance...

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2002-02-09 18:37 ]

You're right - that's exactly what Moller is describing. The "skycar" and control system he proposes would eliminate pilot control - it would all be automatic, with the "traffic" lanes divided into 200 -ft layers that all travel the same speed and direction at 15 degree intervals. He says that there's no way he could imagine people just flying around in these things wherever they wanted. Aside from the fact that everyone would need some sort of pilot's liscense, I know that my habit of tailgating wouldn't do me any good....

[ This Message was edited by: BenMund on 2002-02-10 07:55 ]

I still don't think it will happen - the potential for disaster is enormous.

What we really need is a radically new form of power and propulsion - something that has very few moving parts and is therefore less prone to failure.

If you believe the hundreds of sources claiming that secret organisations already have anti-grav drives and zero-point-energy power sources, then I think it's these sort of technologies (if they exist) that will truly make the spinner a reality.

Unfortunately, these sort of technologies (again, if they exist) would probably be considered a threat to the global economy and are therefore not likely to enter the public domain until the oil/gas companies have extracted and burned the trillions of dollars of fossil fuels that are still in the ground - money truly does make the world go round...

I love conspiracy theories

_________________

Richard Gunn
News and Content Manager for Bladezone
richardg@bladezone.com

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2002-02-10 08:27 ]
