I've sent this out in the last Offworld News-letter, but just in case you don't subscribe (why not?):

Here in the UK, Channel 4, one of our established terrestial TV channels, has just shown it's '100 Greatest Movies of All Time' program - the six-hour program (shown in two halves) counted down the list of greatest movies as voted for by the viewing public through Channel 4's website.

And our favourite film came in at....

...number 8! I think you'll agree that's a very respectable position especially when you consider that the competition is every other film ever made!!

Congratulations go to Ridley, the cast and crew and everyone involved in the making of THE defining Sci-Fi movie.

The top ten reads as follows:

1) Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back
2) The Godfather / Godfather II
3) The Shawshank Redemption
4) Pulp Fiction
5) Some Like it Hot
6) Gladiator
7) It's a Wonderful Life
8) Blade Runner
9) Schindler's List
10) Goodfellas

Visit the 'Channel 4' website to see the full list: http://www.channel4.com/greatest/ (site was down when I checked)

Alternatively, see the article that the BBC has written about the program: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/entertainment/film/newsid_1676000/1676023.stm

Bye for now.

_________________

The difference between the impossible and the possible is equal to the difference between today and tomorrow.

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2001-11-25 20:00 ]

Doh - I've just noticed that Ridley has two movies in the top ten - Gladiator's there at number 6 - I can only send one newsletter a day, so, if you're reading this Ridley, it's a double congratulations to you!

I've just received an email from 'NetRunner' who tells me that the final list was posted on his site before Channel 4 even posted it on theirs - here's the link: http://www.brmovie.com/Articles/Top_100_Channel4_2001_Nov.htm

_________________

The difference between the impossible and the possible is equal to the difference between today and tomorrow.

[ This Message was edited by: Deckard BR26354 on 2001-11-25 20:53 ]

YAY! No.8?? I really didn't think that it would get in the top 10 (not because I think its bad, far from it). I lept up out of my seat when I first heard that Vangalis music. Great.

The Channel 4 website originally printed the results in completely the wrong order, then took the pages off-line for most of the rest of the day, but finally managed to put up the simple results list. All the news services got the Top 100 sent to them with an error, so the BBC, Sky, etc. all have an erroneous list.
BRmovie.com had the correct list, (now confirmed against the Channel 4 list), except we had it published before the programme even finished on Sunday night! So, for ages it was about the only place you could get the true facts, plus an interesting article besides!
