Heya all, I've heard the argument a lot that many people feel the DC of Blade Runner ruins the theme of Humans being more lacking in emotion than replicants, as Deckards emotions are remorseless and violent. A friend pointed out to me though, that in the commercial cut, the voice overs include sections about Deckard feeling remorseful about shooting Zhora in the back. Could this ruin the theme in hte original movie, making Deckard have *some* emotion? Is Deckard in the Commercial Cut intended to be, not human, not replicant, but something betweent he two, with the capabilities to have the emotional mindset of both (minus the super powers of couse <IMG SRC="/forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> ) What do you guys think???

Emotions.. The issue is not black + white as some people think. i.e Directors Cut 'replicant', Original 'human'. Ridley Scott says he is a replicant in the Mark Kermode documentary 'The Edge of Blade Runner'. Philip K.Dick says he is human. I'd rather imagine it is ambigious and let the viewer make up his own mind. Personally I think the whole Deckard = Replicant debate is raised as a pointless sell off, of no interest to me whatsoever. He is a human, with human failings. Quite a depressed character, not lacking in emotion but definitely supressing his emotions with the weight of a lifetime of hunting replicants and living in a dystopian environment. The replicants come across as 'lost' but definitely lack emotional traits, apart from Rachel, hence the difficulting in the Voight-Kampff test in classifying her. No matter how many times I view the movie, Directors Cut, Theatrical I feel the same way about it and nobody will shake from that. Perhaps the new DVD version in the Winter will shed more light on the subject? Until then I am happy he is a flawed human.

Nah - Harrison played him as a human as that was what he presumed at the time of shooting.

Paul, your question depends on an individual variable, weather or not people think deckard is a replicant.

Well, whether or not each individual thinks Deckard is a Replicant or a Human is certainly every individuals choice, (and so far that choice has remained whatever version of the movie you watch - I wonder about the BR:SE...) Anyway, it should be clear the Deckard *does* have emotions, whatever he is. And I would submit that he doen't like killing Reps. ("I'm twice as quit now.") So, really, we can relate the emotions and empathy to the deeper question of "What is Human?" which is really the main question.
