im checking out deep exploration now. it looks very good, suppoting maya as well. is it worth the $300? are you using them demo or the full version? i might buy it...even though $300 is all i have in the back right now, but it looks like its worth it.

thanks a bunch man. can you check if they'll post it at scifi3d? i think a lot of other maya users will also like the Blade Runne rmodels as well.

THX1138,
Oh my gosh it is SO worth it! It reads and imports so many objects .... WOW!
The only limitation of the program is that you have to have the 3d program your exporting to (or at least a demo of it).
I had to borrow a demo of Maya from work so I could export Maya objects. Likewise I had to install MAX on my Lightwave system to export the MAX format. A lot of the older 3D formats export without the software installed (Like 3DS, DXF, OBJ, etc.) but the newer ones require the software to act as a translator.
One of the little issues I've seen is that it does not handle non-quad or non-triangulated polygons. Lightwave handles them fine, but most other progarams do not. When I first tried to export the spinner it corrupted the mesh because there were lots of non quad polygons. So I cut the spinner in half, triangulated the polygons and saved them as seperate objects. They then converted fine and I was able to import them into Maya without corruption, and I could save them together as one object again.
Another little quirk that's been carried over from all the other convertor programs are the textures. The coordinates always seem to come out OK but the application and amplitude don't always look right. But tweaking textures isn't difficult if you know the programs well enough.

Welcome to the Treybortorium! Rooms are $100 a night, but padded cells are free....
well, ill have to check out the demo first. im not a heavy hard-core 3d modeler like you, so i may not need it. but for the LBR project, patryk works with 3ds max, so my models are done in maya then exported into .vrml, sometimes the textures work, sometimes not. i may only need the program for the LBR project and thats all, might not be worth it. what does the demo offer? is it fully-functional for 30 days, or does it have limited features?
alsmost forgot, what software are you using to mode, animate, render, edit video and texture? basically, what is ALL the software you're using on the project so far? im just interested in what a pro. uses to do his work.

I worked on some meshe this weekend and I'll post some test render's later.
BTW: a Guy at the LWG forum posted a link :

These are matte paintings done by a professional CG company. Look in the sections for the Rexall and Freeek videos. Makes me want to redo some of my city....

well, comparing yours to theirs, i would say you need improvements. just kidding. heck, you'rs are 10 times as good as mine. i dont think ill ever have a machine that could render what you're doing, therefore, i will never be as good as you. but. anyways, those pics looks kool. what if "Freeek"? a blade runner clone? looks like it.

They also have people that sit and do CGI all day... I can only do it on weekends and after work....
Freeek is a music video by George Michael

Yeah the front is flat, but it should be round.
the small round side window does not look exatly as on the original spinner, the mine isn't looking that too.
if you'd like i can post some more detailed pics from my spinner, you might find something what you have missed.
as i looked at yours i could see what i have missed too.
lemmy know.

Just wanted to show everyone that I'm not slacking...just a little busy with work and Christmas.....
These are some test images of more models I've been working on. The first is a car design.
The concept was from DeckardBR26354 over at Lego BR (just a start... but what do you think?)
The next image is a set of models some created by me and some created by Patryk Wawer at Lego BR.
(thank you so very much Patryk for the trade of models-- I look forward to sharing more)
I imported them into LW and retextured them & then added my own models into the scene.
The last image was a building inspired by a web site url sent to me recently.
It's a nice semi-futuristic industrial style builing.
Also--some breaking news-- Patrick Parenteau, a professional CG artist has agreed to help us with some of the CG work in the film.
Presently he's abroad working on another film, but has agreed to help when he returns.
You can see some of his professional stuff at his official web site:

i never thought that these two towers will look a great in a dark atmosphere.
for LBR i made some test renders, but with daylight to see how much realism i can get.
the city-van designed by DeckardBR26345 looks kind a toy car
but it's pretty nice.
About the trades, i self got not much new models, perhaps THX will something interesting for you.
i really like your window textures, perhaps we can exange textures?
