BR Meetup at Anime Expo 2009? Or at LosCon 36?

I know we've been talking a little bit about a Blade Runner Convention, particularly in November, 2009, when we will be only 10 years away from the time in which the movie Blade Runner takes place. However, organizing a con is a pretty daunting thing, even for a small relaxacon which I suspect any BR Con would most resemble.

There are two SF/Media fan events which happen here in Los Angeles each year which might fill the bill as a focus for a BR meetup. One will actually be happening in November, 2009, which would be LosCon 36. The site for LosCon 35 is up now, and LosCon 35 might provide an opportunity for a meetup among LA-area BR fans interested in putting a BR meetup party together for the next year. LosCon takes place at the LAX Marriott Hotel. The other one would be Anime Expo, which will be returning to the Los Angeles Convention Center between July 2 and July 5th 2009 after a very successful run last weekend.

LosCon has time on its side...November 2009. 10 years to November 2019. However, it's at LAX. It's near West Los Angeles, true, and the South Bay. But it's cut off from the rest of Los Angeles. And it's certainly cut off from the areas associated with Blade Runner.

Anime Expo, on the other hand, is right in the middle of Blade Runner's Los Angeles. The LACC does indeed look like it belongs in the Blade Runner landscape. And the location is close to both the shooting locations of Blade Runner and of other places evocative of the movie. Anime has had a long history of being influenced by Blade Runner, from Bubblegum Crisis to Serial Experiments: Lain to Ghost In The Shell and its sequel Innocence. The harder edged and more philosophical types of anime owe much to Blade Runner. In a lot of respects, AX is a more fitting site for a BR meetup.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? Please let me know.
Yes, I really live in Los Angeles. Srsly. And yeah, life really does imitate art here. Especially now we've got those video billboards. No spinners yet. But I suppose that's next.

One day we will have teleporters.

Then I can come from New Jersey down to CA for a bit.

Till then, I hope whatever you plan out works.

Ditto for me in NY. I am with you in spirit!
